Driveshafts mk1 vs mk3(?)

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Please can anyone tell me if the driveshafts on a 1982 1.1 popular plus can be used on a 1994 1.6Si 16v engine n box?

I'm fairly sure they're not compatible.

Hiya TomsFocus,

Thanks for the info...

If I buy the driveshafts for a mk3 fiesta would I then need the legs too? And if I got the legs then I'm guessing I'd need to replace the suspension tops on the inner wings with newer ones with 3 holes in each top as opposed to the current ones that just have 2 holes?...

Thanks again...

I don't know unfortunately.  It's an interesting project, but too far back for my own experience.  The online parts catalogues are vague for the older cars as well, so difficult to cross reference parts that way.  All I can really say is that there is more than one shaft available for the Mk3, and neither have the same part number as the Mk1.

If it was my project, I'd see if the driveshafts can be custom made.  I've been involved with engine swap projects before where this was the best solution.  Effectively you need the inner CV's from the Mk3 engine, the outer CVs from the Mk1 hubs, the shafts can be cut to length if they're too long, then cut & sleeve to weld for strength.

If you can find any specific groups or owners club for the MK1 they might be able to confirm which parts are compatible.  I'm not sure if we have any members on here with such in depth knowledge of Mk1's.

I was inspired by this article

https://www.zetecinside.com/xr2/stepbystep.shtml

But it's targeted at a 2.0ltr mondeo engine...

So lots of things are different.

I'll try to research it more, but the grey matter is fading lol

I bought a 1.6Si 16v engine and gearbox together, I'm pretty sure both the drive shafts ends (on gearbox end not the wheel end) have come with the engine and gearbox, you can just see one in the photo.

So following what you said is always an option, I'd still need to uprate the brakes, and hence leaning towards finding complete mk3 legs from a 1.6.... Still undecided at this moment until I've saved up a little more lol. 😂
