fiesta 1.4 TDCI Timing belt question.

Featured Replies

ok so thinking this should be an easy one for one of the boffins on here 😄

I've got a 2007 fiesta 1.4tdci on just over 148k. been told the belt should be done at 150k on these and on inspecting the belt i cant know 100% but i'm VERY confident its the original belt. there are some signs of light cracking and there is no righting anywhere left on the belt so yes i know it needs to be changed.

not having the pins and things i've found someone that will do the job parts and labor £300 and that is including belt, tensioner, idler, water pump and coolant so not the worse price in the world.

the QUESTION?

is there anything else i should change while getting it done and what is known about how long the belts on these normally last, are they really a serious risk after 150k and a ticking time bomb or is it more aim at 150k be sure to have it done by 155k for example.

another words if i cant afford to get it sorted at 150k should i borrow a car until i can get it done lol

thanks in advance for any replies as always you guys are keeping me on the road and in a ford 😛

Seems a reasonable price.

Providing the engine and car is still is good condition at that mileage, it's worth doing.

Better than letting it snap and killing a useable car

Your ticking time bomb should have gone off 5 years ago !!  --  It must have a faulty fuse.

Timing belts have a maximum life expectancy of 10 years regardless of mileage because the rubber deteriorates with age as much, if not more so than mileage.

That is a good price. We have just paid around £400 for the same job on a 10 year old Kuga, with only 43,000 miles on the clock.

If you still have the original belt on the car now then don't delay any longer in getting it changed. If it snaps your engine will instantly be turned in to a pile of scrap metal.

borrowed time ☠️

I reckon it's already been done once.  The belts rarely snap on 1.4/1.6 TDCI's, but 15 years and 150k really is pushing it lol.

The coolant should be fully changed as well, not just topped up.  And you'll probably want an aux belt, although that can be changed easily at a later date so not a major concern.

thanks for the replies all yeah i know if the belt go's it s a dead engine just didnt know the "chances" of them going. but from your replies i'll deffo look at it being done in next couple of weeks. as for the coolant full flush was always planned and the aux belt i'll get to should it need it later down the line i got whats needed to do that at least.

will have a few questions for you guru's soon on ABS unit (or wiring!) and air con checking, testing and possibly repairing so stay tuned to follow the fun.

also the car is being used as a delivery car for the most part with the odd trip to do some shopping or drop the kids and misses somewhere so i'll be looking into some odd little mods that i will share as i get to them 🙂

that's what we are here for 👍

Hello folks, just to add, isn't it worth getting the water pump changed at same time as the belt on these engines, or am I confused?

The water pump will be done the same time 🙂 and any engine with the water pump driven by the timing belt should have the water pump done with the timing, just good practice.

nothing to be sorry for haha, just makes sense to do it when the belt is off anyway given its not that expensive a part.

OK so update time the car is booked to have the timing belt done tomorrow, So fingers crossed that will be one more thing off the list of todo's on the car 😄

ok final update on this one, timing belt has been changed and is all happy. now on to my next issue power steering decided to dump its fluid about hour after the timing was done, cant quite tell yet if its from a pipe or the pump but the loss of steering and the pump whine was enough for me to know it wasn't happy. pulled over and fluid everywhere so will investigate that in morning and start a new post on it should it be interesting enough for it.
