Tinting

Featured Replies

Am debating tinting the back end with limo tint, the rear screen and quarters i get. Whats the score with doing rear windows, i appreciate 90% of the time theres just me in there, but does it scratch with up and down ? Also does the rear affect the heated screen, how it clears or works. Theres a guy near me just starting up and running some massive discounts, £60 the backend inc doors. Whats people experience please.

I tint the windows on all my cars. As long as the tint is good quality there should be no issues with the windows going up and down. I have never had any damage to rear windows, my daughter puts them up and down all the time. The rear window functions as it always does, the heating elements work normally and they don't damage the film.

Bear in mind that visibility is reduced in the dark, obviously you don't drive backwards but it comes into play when parking.

£60 is a massive discounted price, it's normally about £150 for tints from the B pillar back. I would recommend a 15% tint rather than complete limo tint.

Cheers for that Jonro, looks like its a goer then.

For me personally it's essential for a number of reasons. In my opinion it's aesthetically pleasing, it helps my daughter with the glare from the sun and it's a good security feature too.

I'm a big fan of factory privacy glass but can't stand tint film.

From outside it always shows the outline of the window edge as well as the orange elements grinning above it on the rear screen.  Plus it never seems to be perfect, I've bought numerous cars with it and can always see bubbles or wrinkles somewhere.

If you do go for it, I'd also advise against limo tint, makes night time parking virtually impossible.

Planning on doing my mondeo in the spring time. My son complains about sun glare. (Can’t see his iPhone or Nintendo switch properly) so tough being a kid these days.lol

My Mk5 Mondeo cost me £175

Was quoted £150 to do rear windows on my mk4 mondeo won’t be paying that going to do it myself.😂

That's a fair price to be honest, still it's £150 which could be spent elsewhere. I don't have the patience to do my own tints but I might give it a try one day.

I know you can cut the film on the exterior and then prep it and then take it into the car. What gets me though is how do you get the film right down below the lip at the bottom of the window?

Can buy them pre cut on eBay for around £30. Application is with soap and water so easy to slide down into window lip.

A few years ago, I got the roof of my then car 'wrapped', the car beside was getting window tints, so I watched the guy do it. It looked remarkably easy, and therein lies the issue. When you watch an expert do their craft, it always looks easy - it isn't!

Spot on, it looks easy because it's their craft. I can make what I am trained to do look easy, I doubt anyone could do an equal job after just watching a YT video. It won't stop me having a bash though haha

Fair point about experts making it look easy but won’t stop me having a bash either.lol. It isn’t exactly open heart surgery. You don’t learn not trying. Hopefully post some pic’s at my attempt.👍

Got mine done, paid £140 which is about the norm these days. Good quality film won't get marked/damaged when the windows are used, but you need to leave a good 48 hours after fitting before using the electric windows, otherwise the film can come off.

You *can* do it yourself but you'll need a heatgun to pre-shrink the film (you do it on the outside so that the film adapts to the curve of the glass). If you don't do this, you will not be able to get rid of air bubbles and it will look a right pig when you apply it. You will also need various other installation tools which you're probably only going to use once.

I'd personally be worried that someone charging only £60 for this (which, knowing how much quality tinting film costs, doesn't give a great deal of profit) might not really know what he's doing. I'd happily pay the normal rate for someone with a good reputation.

I'd say £140 is at the cheaper end of the spectrum, good value for money for you. I've got all the tools as I do a lot of vinyl wrapping of the interior parts. I find that quite easy, not sure about window tint though lol.

My windows have a light tint from factory but I really want it darker, I'm planning to just use a medium smoke tint to get the effect I want.

Good advice darkman. Only reason I have for attempting this myself is my car cost hundreds not thousands and is a workhorse I use for lugging my tools around. (Agree if I had a decent car I wouldn’t attempt it myself)
