Hi, I bought my self a 02 focus, 1.6 L lX air con central locking, alloys and front electric windows , 5 door hatch 93,000 miles. Clean inside and out apart from the slight body marks. Full service history and 3 months rac warranty and full mot.Its a lovely drive,I've had it afew weeks dose'nt appear to have anything wrong with it. I bought it for £2990 I got 100 knocked off the price and £500 for my old rusty 1998 vectra. A friend of friend told me that i've paid too much, the mileage is too high. keeping in mind I probably only do 2000 miles a year at the most. What do you reckon, going of hundreds of adds I've seen around it was a good price.

well hate to be the bearer of bad news but yes hes correct these are the official prices Dealer £2,255 Private £1,870 bear in mind i got a 2001 y reg built march 2001 5 door focus 1.8 zetec with 64k on it and with all but aircon and rear electric windows with a full history years warranty full mot and service for £2300 it was advertised at the dealers for 2995 my old passat was taken at 1000 trade in which was a 1998 on 94k miles and i haggled for some extra off the top so cash i paid £1300

mines the zetec so sport seats stiffer springs elec windows alloys manual mirrors no aircon though remote central locking etc etc

haha Oh dear nevermind there is'nt alot that can be done now.I supose as long as I can get a few years out of it without too many hicups it will be fine. But i didn't see any at the price you quoted mine was in the best condition of all i had seen at a simular price. The cars I looked at with lower mileage and price had poor bodywork or hardly any service history. Then again I was in a rush to change my vectra as it had various problems which would of ended up costing me over £200 to get it a decent running condition. So I supose the lessen is plan ahead rather than leave it to the last minute when I buy my next car.

Either way Zev paid on the top side, by how much is harder to access. I mean we would need to know the spec and year of the motor that was traded in .

no dealers black book is what im using what car is okay for an average but ive got a black book from my old work with the prices in iteven at that price on wisebuyers my zetec is only 140 quid less in valuation now the mileage has gone up ide have held out i think 140 quid difference for the revised version isnt much

Thanks for that I dont feel quite so daft even though I did pay alittle higher than I should of. As I said I was in a hurry to get rid of my 1998 1.8l vectra estate envoy. It had about 120,000 miles on the clock and it was quite rusty with a slight bump on the back where some idiot reversed into me and then drove off. Nevermind whats done is done it is in good condition so I should get a few years out of it while I save for another car.

93k soiunds a lot but ive seen petroil focuses in with 140k upwards on a petrol so i wouldnt worry about that too much the focus warms up quicker preventing engine wear and the 5w oil helps as well the engines are pretty tough

I have noticed that the temp gauge needle soon jumps up to half way within a couple of minutes, And I've not seen it go any higher as yet .At least I know that its normal. Was begining to wonder if it was fualty haha thank goodness its not

Now as to why I would go with a "Wisebuyer" valuation over a "What Car" valuation, I'll explain as follows.

In zev's valuations Wisebuyers was higher, valuing my car at current valuation mine comes out with a Wisebuyer valuation [£5,805] lower than a What Car valuation [£6,050]. Now considering I bought it 9 months ago to the day @ £6200 [it was advertised at £6500 by the Ford Main Dealer] I reckon that shows the Wisebuyer valuation to be nearer the mark. You never get a bargain at Dealers, you may come away thinking you have but that's just the art of salesmanship. If you know what you should paying you will get it for what it is worth [the market dictates what it is worth] if you don't you will invariably pay through the nose.

Coincidently they wanted to give me £5,000 for the motor I traded in, which I had bought 9 months previously @ £5,990 we settled at £5,800. I must say during that period second hand car values where actually going up due to the shortage of second hand cars coming onto the market because new car sales volumes had dropped off a cliff due to the banking crisis.

i wouldnt expect the temp needle to jump up quite that quick to the halfway mark easy way to check feel the top rad hose when the needle shows halfway it should be hot if not stuck thermosat

So to have got £500 from a dealer, that was at least £300 more than what it was worth. So lets just assume £2,530 is Focus true valuation, and £200 was a true valuation for your Vectra. You should have parted with £2,530-£200 = £2330 but you parted with £2,490 in cash. There I bet you feel tonnes better now. :D
