Changing exhaust muffler without a jack

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have changed my exhaust on my fiesta with muffler clamped to the pipe. I have been driving for awhile and noticed it’s just too loud.

So I’m thinking of getting a genuine ford muffler which has the same clamp on setup. The problem is that I don’t have a jack or ramps. Is it possible to change the exhaust while wheels on the ground?

thank you!

Short answer is NO.

If you don't have the equipment needed to lift the car and can't find a friend to lend you what you need then there is one old school emergency trick you can use. I do not endorse this and you do it at your own risk.

Find a place to park where the road kerb is high. Drive the passenger side of the car up on to the kerb like you do when parking. It will lift the vehicle about 6" (150mm) off the ground, enough to just get underneath provided your not a big fellow. I repeat this is at your own risk.

On a point of order: Only Americans have 'Mufflers' We British have 'Silencers'

thank you! I did undo the clamp by lying on the ground but I wasn’t sure if i could take the mountings off. I guess I’ll try the kerb trick 🙂

I've never heard of a non OEM silencer being noticeably louder than a genuine one. Are you sure it's fitted correctly and not blowing at the joint?  Might be worth checking / refitting it before buying a new one, perhaps.

I am quite sure it’s a faulty silencer as I have fitted it twice from different garages. The noise and vibration is still there.… I’ve ordered genuine Ford silencer so fingers crossed 🙂

I managed to change it with all wheels on the ground! Only thing I broke was one of the rubber mount which i will replace tomorrow.
Genuine Ford exhaust is definitely quieter and nicer haha thank you! 4C1DD8BA-7420-4A06-A101-608A2017DF33.thumb.jpeg.27feff9010678ab3ff33c38e21f2e205.jpeg

Well done. You must be thinner/younger/fitter than some of us on this forum.👴🏽

Thanks for the update. 🙂
