Gearbox problem

Featured Replies

Hello

I have Ford S-Max 2010 2.0TDCI with powershift gearbox.

Problem is that it is throwing an error on the dashboard transmission limited function. On the morning when i reverse everthing is okey but when i select D i goes in with a little bang and throws this message. Gearbox goes into limp mode can't drive over 40km/h and it stays on 2nd gear. When i drive a little bit and restart the car error doesnt come back but when i accelerate then rev goes up  and down but changes gear smoothly. There was only one error code P0766 Solenoid shift valve D component remains closed.

First if this kind error came up, i changed gearbox oil and filter but fault remained.

Have anyone had same problem?

First thing to check is for broken wires in the main body connector in the LH front wheel arch, behind the wheel arch liner.

Check continuity between the PCM, TCM and transmission BEFORE you spend any money

The wires can corrode and break.

After that, ensure the battery is in good condition as powershift works off 12V alone

Maybe someone has wirinig diagram?

Is broken wires common problem?

On friday car drove even worse. When i select D, gear wen't in with a bump and after few meters gears dissapeared. Yesterday scanned for trouble codes there was P0766 and P0771 fault code. Maybe solenoids are blocked?

Yes, check for full continuity first AND battery performance

If you have a COMMS fault it can cause all sorts of issues to make you think the transmission is faulty

Wires seems to be okey, because when oil gets warmer the problem like gets softer and gear changes are smooth.  When oil is cold P and D go in harsh and throws an error to dashboard.

If clutch is going bad what are the symptoms?

Has it got the correct Ford specification transmission oil ? Temperature should not be a problem unless of course you are in Finland or similar.

Has the fluid been changed regular?

If you have issues when cold then suspect fluids and clogged solenoids due to the fluid not being changed

Has anybody done manual swap? How hard it is do code modules? And what part's do i need beside flywheel with clutch kit, pedals, clutch master cylinder, brake reservoir and drive shafts?

It's a lot cheaper and a lot less hassle to take the car to we buy any car.com and get rid

You need all the parts you mentioned plus a new engine harness and front end harness, PCM and then someone to reconfigure all the modules

I know you said the wires seem OK, but did you actually get them checked for continuity?

No I didnt check wires with ohm or multimeter.

So yesterday i started engine and tried all the gears, when putting from D to N it went to limp and throwed an error to dashboard transmission limited function so i leave it. Today i tried again with cold engine all the gears no error i went for a test drive and the car was like when clutch is slipping rpms goes high and down then it throw transmission malfunction to dashboard not limited function. I drove back home I restarted engine twice then the error went away. Then i left car to idle for few minutes and went back to test drive and what a suprise no errors and drives normally and shifts gears smoothly. Ill look what it will doo tomorrow.

One additional note, when engine was cold I heard like pump was running dry. With rising rpms this sound went louder. With warm engine went away.

Seems issue was in dirty oil, because first time when we drain gearbox, oil was dark and second time when i took mechatronic unit out, oil was also dark after under 200km drive. Today drove over 50 km no errors gear shifting was smooth and rpm didnt go up and down. I add photos how dirty my magnets were and oil after 200km. I cleaned solenoids and valve body. I hope it will last until i get rid off the car.
