2.5t duratec i5 camshaft belt snapped

Featured Replies

Hello,

I was wondering if any one on here can provide some knowledge and advice.

I’ve just bought a 2006 smax with the 2.5 duratec i5 engine.

I’ve had it a week and the camshaft belt has snapped at idol shortly after starting in the morning. There was a receipt for timing belt and water pump at 73k it’s now on 100k so really wasn’t expecting it.

first thing, is the 2.5 duratec i5 an interference engine?

second thing, if it is an interference engine, what are the chances (as it was at idol) that the valve rods etc are undamaged?

lastly, is there an easy way (whiteout taking off the head) of assessing if there is any damage?

The 5-cilinder 2.5 Duratec (Volvo) engine is an interference engine and yes, there will definitely be damage to the valves when the cambelt fails, even at idle speed.
