Clutch noise after replacement

Featured Replies

Hi can anyone help me took my car to a local garage for them to replace the clutch he replaced it but there is a knocking noise when the clutch is not pressed i took it back and he is saying its a input shaft bearing but the noise was not there before and wants me to take it back so he can put thicker oil in the gearbox thats all he can do what do i do people thanks

Gearbox oil is made to tighter tolerances than engine oil.  Adding thicker oil doesn't sound like a good idea to me, it's likely to just make gearchanges more difficult and add to internal wear.

If the input shaft bearing is failing, the gearbox needs to be removed and repaired.  It is possible that it became damaged during the clutch change but I don't see how you could prove that so it's just your word against the garages.

One or two handfuls of sawdust in the gearbox should quiet it down 🤣

I've seen it done on TV so it must be what to do.

Thicker GB oil doesn't solve the problem only hides it for a while.

Many a true word is spoken in jest, a friend of mine did that to quieten down his noisy Hillman Imp engine just before he sold it.

How loud are we talking? Is it like oh my god whats that noise?

Was it there immediately after you picked it up?

Not sure if its possible to get the clutch friction plate the wrong way on these, i know its possible on other cars if your careless.

I would also get a second opinion, good techs are very good at diagnosing transmission noises.

Ive never known a noise to suddenly be there straight after a job without the tech being the cause.

Put it this way, if i just done a cambelt and there was suddenly a noise that wasnt there before, i would be taking it straight apart to check my work, no question about it.

Yes i am thinking of doing that and he wont do nothing with it said all i can do is put thicker oil in to quiten it down but its a input shaft bearing and is gunna cost so much to get it fixed

All i can say is that there is no way he can say its the input shaft bearing without the box removed and physically rotating it with his hand. if he did do this when it was removed then he should have phoned you asking if you wanted the box to get sent away for repair before refitting.

Even if this happened just by coincidence striaght after putting the box back in, most garages would feel ablidged to removed the box again for free then just charge you for the gearbox repair bill.

In my own opinion anyway.

Your garage maybe, I don't think most would...
