Should I replace the tensioner pulley with my timing belt?

Featured Replies

I’m changing the timing belt on my fiesta mk7 1.25!

I know I should get a new water pump and auxiliary belt whilst I am there but should I also replace the tensioner pulley?

If so is there a company that makes them oem?

im going for a contitech timing belt, a dayco drive belt, and a airtex water pump

Personally I would. They do get noisy and could cause damage if they break up or seize, it depends on how deep your pockets are and how long you want to keep the car.

I don't have any recommendations for the best aftermarket make.

Dayco make the OEM cambelt tensioners for this engine.

And as above, with all the labour time to reach it, I'd always change them with the belt personally.

There is this one on eBay but I was expecting much more than £8 and free delivery? Could it be non genuine or are they just cheap?

They are cheap to make and marked up massively by Ford...however that does seem suspiciously cheap!  I reckon it's someone that just buys up old stock really cheap and sells it on.  (TK Maxx for cars!)

I'm always sceptical about branded parts being made to the same spec as OEM parts if they're not stamped FoMoCo though.

If you do an eBay search for part number 1361840 you'll see a few new old stock Ford branded ones under £30.  Battered boxes and may have stored in unfavourable conditions so it's your choice at the end of the day.

You’re right it’s not worth the risk! It’s at 100k now and I’ll just send it into the end of time after replacing all of this. This car won’t be seeing another belt from me after this one

When you get the old one off if you give it a spin and do the same to the new one, then you will wonder why you even thought about not renewing it.

Had two airtex water pumps leak in 6000 mile due to bearing failure on a Ti-VCT, before reverting back to the Ford pump.  Each replacement was a new belt as well, so heed my warning on the pump.

Nice save! It was just the more expensive option at eurocarparts! I guess that isn’t anything to go by.

what do you think about:

Gates Timing Belt + Water Pump Kit Fits Ford Fiesta Focus - KP15669XS

it’s drastically reduced to £95 at the minute and it comes with a wp gasket, tensioner, and new bolts for the crankshaft etc

I’m not sure which brand to go for now for both the water pump and the cam belt. I can’t seem to find who the actual oem for both the belts and the water pumps. I don’t really want to pay an additional 50% to have ford stamped on them. But I also don’t want to buy a ***** belt or wp

I think Contitech and Dayco are as good as they get for belts, its just the wp.  Also worth a consider is SKF.  Go direct on their site and get all 3.  If the aux belt is a stretch belt get a cheap fitting tool off Ebay, makes fitting a doddle, swearbox required without it lol.
