Fiesta 65 Plate 1.25 Rear Suspension

Featured Replies

I recently replaced both shocks and springs (Standard) on the rear of the car, however, it sounds like I`ve not changed the drivers side rear suspension at all. Going over speed bumps slowly both sides sound as they should be but at any higher speed there is a proper thud from the right hand side. Any help would be great!

Have you checked for anything loose in the boot?

If it's definitely suspension related, I'd suspect a loose or worn top mount on the shock.

How do you test the top mount for wear?

No quick way really.  Rear end needs to be jacked up, bottom of the shock unbolted and then see how much up & down play there is at the top end.  By the time you've done all that, you may as well unbolt the top mount and check it visually as well.

Check rear axle bushes, these thud aswell, you will have to stick you head right under there to see properly

Sorry for the delayed reply,

So I`ve had everything off, even replaced the spring lower seat plastic cap. Now everything looks and feels fine no play or anything like that, even asked an ex mechanic at work and he said it was probably the drop link, however there is no drop link.

Still no further forward.

I don`t know if it helps but at very slow speeds going over speed bumps it sounds absolutely fine, but at any speed at all it really sounds bad, like almost a squeezing compressing thud. Sometimes even think I can hear it when accelerating from stop/slow speeds.

Have u properly checked those rear axle bushes yet?, you obviously need a proper tech to look over it

You can check yourself if you jack one side up, USE AN AXLE STAND! , stick your head right under to where the big bush is with a bolt going through it, use a small torch and you will be able to see if the bush looks all split. Have done loads of these for banging, they are poor quality

Thanks for all the advice from everyone.  Got the car up on sticks and checked the bushes, they were both worn with the drivers side defiantly the worst. Really surprised that  they`ve gone as the car has only done 40k.  Unfortunately I had to put it into the garage to have them done, as along with the weather I would have to do it at the roadside.  £210 it cost me, don't know if that's good or bad?  I thought it was reasonable enough.

No worries, very common.

and thats a very good price👍

Thanks Ecosport2019, thought you might have thought I was being awkward in not replying. I work shifts with no real weekends off.  I live quite close to work so I thought I wasn`t going to cause too much more damage till I could have a look.  Thanks again for your advice, I might ask again haha
