S max wont start

Featured Replies

Ok so here’s the deal. I have 2012 s-max, automatic power shift gearbox, diesel. Push button keyless start.
i was on my way to airport (perfect timing right). I pulled at the traffic lights…. I wasn’t in the wrong lane but needed to get out ahead of a lorry. I knocked the gearbox over to sport for a bit faster takeoff (nothing unusual). Lights turned green so I put my foot down (I must say I didn’t slam my foot to the floor or do anything I would call unusual).

Then a clunk that felt like it slipped out of gear, and the car died. Engine management light came on and then nothing. The car wouldn’t  start again.

Also the battery wouldn’t turn off, so radio, air con etc still worked but the ignition wouldn’t turn them off. The door wouldn’t lock either.

Luckily a friend came to my rescue and he waited for the recovery truck to come and I took his car to the airport.

Im home in a couple of days and my car is sat on my friends drive with a dead battery waiting for me.

Has anyone had any issues or have any suggestions? I can’t seem to find anything on the internet.

thank in advance

Sounds just like dead battery.

When you replace battery ensure you reset transmission - search youtube for powershift transmission reset.

Possible alternator fault - has gone short-circuit.

Battery is now totally flat - Unlikely to recover, so new battery required.

TCM not happy and requires reset - Can be easily reset using FORScan

Thanks for the quick replies. I really hope this is the issue, it was the big clunk out of gear that worried me. I was thinking clutch or flywheel or gearbox. But I’m not very mechanically minded. I’ve got my fingers crossed that your right

Ok so in case this helps someone it was a the tcm fuse that had blown. It was unbelievable, I was shocked how simple a fix it was

Good news 👍, but fuses don't blow without a reason. I'd expect sooner or later you will probably have the same issue again. If it does happen again then check the connectors of the TCM and then remove the covers and check inside for damaged or corroded wires.

As Unofix says, you need to investigate why the fuse blew. And keep some spares in the car
