Can steel rim wobble side to side?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I went to tyre shop near my place the other day as I needed alignment done and I could hear humming noise from the rear of the car.

The guys at the shop took my driver’s side front wheel and put it on wheel balancing machine. It wobbles side to side and didn’t look normal. They said they can put it at the back so they swapped front and back wheels but they also said I need a new wheel soon.
However, the humming noise got louder and it’s now from the front of the car…so I assume the issue was the tyre on my back wheel.

Im going to change initial two rear tyres with new ones. But is it possible for steel wheel to wobble side to side like in this video? Or is it a new kind of scam??  Thank you!

It can wobble like that if you bent it on a kerb / pot hole.  Jack up car, spin wheel, does it wobble like that? Shouldn’t be too hard to check at back of car as you can spin it faster than on front. Make sure car in gear and chock front wheels so it doesn’t roll when you release handbrake

From your description I'd say the front wheel has had quite an impact with a kerb at sometime in the past. This impact together with the continued use of the buckled wheel has caused a failure of the wheel bearing which is what you can now hear.

You need to replace the wheel very soon or it can cause damage to the rear wheel bearing

I will spin it around tomorrow and see if it wobble like it was at the shop. But seems like I need to get a new rim 😮

I mean it is a old car.. but I just changed the front tyres early this year so I might just buy a rim online and take to Costco when I change the rear tyres. Hopefully they will change the tyre for me ( I will pay for the fitting but they might be a bit funny about it.) thank you 🙂

I just bought two wheels with newish tyres as my wheel wobbles so bad when I spun it. I will change them and hopefully other two wheels are okay 🙂
