Woe is me.

Alas, the insurance company have decided that my Fiesta is a write off. A  late 2017 Mk 8 Titanium with a pan roof, I absolutely loved it. Trying to find a replacement with the same spec is virtually impossible as mine had only 24,000 miles on the clock before the scenery got in its way. I would like another but the later cars are actually cheaper in the main for the same model. A 68 plater has a GPF and DMF that  rather put me off buying one and it would appear that others feel the same way as a 17 plater costs very nearly the same (and seems to carry a better spec, too.) What is the counsel of the wise folk on here, please? Am I worrying too much or should I buy a 67 plater with a lot more miles?

I have a gpf and dual mass, i thought all the ecoboosts had a dual mass but i cannot guarantee this...

I dont think gpf's have many issues really, they work completely different from diesel dpf's, they clean on over run off the throttle and dont need adblue etc.

I think your over thinking, if you want one just go for it.

Invest in some scenery avoiding talent 😉 and replace it with something that make's you think "that's the one".

Age and mileage are irrelevant.

Your insurance company should be offering what it would cost to replace, not what it would cost to give to Fraud or We Buy Any Car etc.

Never, ever accept the first offer.

Look at what your car was fetching on Autotrader, pre accident, same age, mileage and condition (your insurance company has)

I didn't! Eventually they paid me £1000 a year for driving the car on top of what I paid for it. The settlement was fair. I have found the identical twin with 48,000 miles with a year's warranty from a Ford dealer with enough left from the settlement to add the camera, mats and spare wheel so that will have to do, I think.

5 speed 1.0EB never used to have a DMF.  So that was all Mk7 Fiestas and the 99ps Mk3 Focus.  However I think all Mk8 Fiesta's are 6 speed (albeit a different 'box), so probably do all have a DMF now.

I have to agree though, DMF isn't something I'd avoid on modern cars.  I've only ever broken one, and that was with a £30, 50 BHP remap on a car with 130k miles on the original clutch & DMF... :whistling:

Earlier six speeds did not have a dmf for certain. It came in with the gpf and the later engine that cuts cylinders.

Ok, Deposit placed on 68 plate Titanium with camera but no pan roof and 35,000 miles on budget and a nondescript blue grey colour.  Only a three month warranty and £500 to extend for two years which I didn't think too much of so I'll take my chances.

I hope you used a credit card.

Despite a garage saying it comes with a 3 month warranty (which they nearly all do), it actually has 6 months cover in the UK.

Thank you for that advice.  I  really hope I won't need it!

Well, it didn't happen. Too many compromises and the colour was heart stopping and not in a good way. If your car says something about you, this one said "Do not resuscitate."

I found what I wanted eventually and it is currently reserved, pending my viewing of the video as it is over 400 miles away. If I like it then I shall buy it tomorrow. Ecoboost 100, Titanium X, Pan roof, 23,000 miles on a 68 plate in Blue Wave. Now that's more like it!

I'd prefer to view the car in the flesh, myself, but I understand that lots of people buy cars remotely if they get it delivered to their front door.  Is that the case here?

If not, and you're going to have to pick it up from them, I'd wait until I saw the car before buying it.

It is four hundred miles away. The vendor is Bristol Street motors with whom I have had satisfactory dealings before. The video was comprehensive, the .gov and etis checks are all good. Were it 150 miles away, I would see it in person but it isn't and this is a difficult car to find, being a pre gpf 68 reg with the right mileage, spec,(3 door Pan roof Titanium X) in a stunning colour and within budget. I get a warranty and am sure that I shall be happy with it. As it will be delivered to my home before Christmas, I am quite content.

I bought my 2019 Focus remotely form Arnold Clark - Glasgow. They sent me a video which was very good. The car was then transported to a branch of the garage only a few miles away. I went and inspected, and there was no obligation that I 'had to buy it'.

The car was like new (only 2000 miles) and so popped my card in the machine, paid for it, picked up the keys and drove off in to the sunset 😀

Bristol Street, are not an outfit that I've had good dealings with here, but every branch is probably different. One thing I don't like is you have to pay them 3 days in advance by bank transfer.

I was sent a comprehensive video of a used Focus from a main dealer...that had been carefully angled to avoid areas of damage. 😒

Needless to say, I wouldn't trust a walkaround video again.  I was 'lucky' enough to return the car as it arrived in such an appalling state, but it was a huge amount of hassle and stress that I'd rather have avoided.

I've never been able to able travel far and been restricted to buying remotely, which probably explains why I've ended up with so many lemons over the years.  It is what is though, can't trust anyone.

That's usually very true.

About 18/19 years ago I travelled from Tyneside to RAF Marham in Norfolk to buy a Cav GSI.  I'd only seen a photo of it in the Auto Trader, and exchanged a couple of text messages with the seller.  It was exactly as described though.

Not everyone is a shyster, but, too many are.
