Transmission Noise

Featured Replies

hi

I have a 57 plate fiesta style 1.25 manual which has a clunking noise as the clutch is brought up which sounds like some gears winding back on themselves.

My car has been in the dealers and they have changed the clutch release bearing off side inner cv joint and a part in the diff the noise still persists and they seem not to know what the problem is, When the cv joint was changed the clunking sound did go away for a shortwhile.

what iam looking for is if anyone else is having or had this problem and to what the fix to this problem can be.

any help or advice i would be gratefull

regards

lee

Clunks are often drive-shaft-coupling related, but only when old/clapped out.

Another cause can be the bottom mount of the gearbox, which has rubber bonding, and oil contact or abusive driving can knacker the bond. There is an uprated mount that has nylon instead of rubber in it, between the metal parts. Again, it is usually a problem experienced on older Fiestas.

The only other thing I can thing I can think of, is that the gearbox was under-filled with oil, or lost some via a damaged inner boot on one of the shafts, as they do split, and better ones are available. (The oil behind the boots, IS the gearbox/diff oil, and the IB/IB5 Fiesta 'box is not the best, and relies on special fully synthetic Castrol SMX-S oil. There have been instances of the wrong oil and under-filling. But a burst boot is more common, and the effect of oil loss could be permanent, due to internal wear in the 'box and diff'. Perhaps they refilled with cheap oil, as the synth version is a bit dearer, at ~ £12/litre, at Halfords. (Easy to fill if you ditch the oil by taking the drive-shaft out, because there is no drain plug for general convenience.)
