Cigar lighter socket power on/off status

Featured Replies

Hi all, my name if Richard and my two growing up children each drive a 1.6 diesel Econetic Fiesta.

I searched here but could not find the answer so I'm wondering if anyone can help.

The Mk7, 2012 model Fiesta has power on at the cigar lighter socket permanently - ignition on or off.

The Mk7.5 2013 model Fiesta has power on at the cigar lighter socket when the ignition is on, it is otherwise powered off.

Are these sockets hard wired with no way of changing this configuration without modifying the wiring?

Research illustrates that you can relocate the fuse on a VW Golf to change the power on status at the socket but this is not something Ford have implemented.

The subject of the power to the cigar sockets is/has always been a problem. The short answer is that on Ford vehicles they are hard wired with no simple "move the fuse" to change from permanent live to ignition controlled.

On most Ford's these days the sockets are controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM). This means that sometimes the sockets are not always as they first seem. It is now common to find that they are time controlled and remain powered for 10 or 15 minutes after the ignition is turned off and the car is locked.

Not that I have ever tried but it is also possible that the operation state of the socket maybe able to be changed in the BCM settings using a programme called FORScan. Even if it can't be altered in the BCM, it is worth downloading FORScan (it's free for laptop use) and getting a vLinker FS lead. Then in future you will always be able to read any DTC's that might occur, and there are always things that you can adjust.
