Ford S-Max 2014 2.0 TDCI - strange sound from oil sump

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

First of all, sorry for my English I'm from Serbia. I have tried to find potential solution for my problem on the local Ford forums but without luck.

So, a few months ago I started hearing a noise from the bottom/right of the car (similar to howling) only in the range between 1900-2100 RPM expecially when engine is cold. Several Ford mehanics inspected a car (including a authorized Ford service in Serbia) and they said that sound is coming from the oil sump/pan more precisely from Oil pump. On other side there is no any error/warning light connected to oil pressure and engine is working ok without any strange sound.

Eventually, I have replaced the oil pump, gear and chain that drive a pump, put original oil filter and replaced the oil. With the new pump, sound is still coming from oil pan but now only can be heard in 1000-1200 RPM range.

So with old oil pump the sound could be heard in the 1900-2100 RPM range and with new one between 1000-1200 RPM. Everything else is checked and it is ok (pulleys, spanners, rollers, turbine, timing belt set changed after pump replacement...).

The mechanics are confused because they thought replacing the pump would fix the problem and they think problem is connected to oil pressure in pump itself not in engine (there is no low oil presure error). Maybe the oil channel between the pump and the pressure regulator is partially clogged?

Do you have any hint what to check next or what is a problem?
