Alternators generate when they have both rotation and excitation.  Off car testing will not be very simple.

Before you do any thing else, I would check the connections to the alternator.  Without an excitation voltage it is unlikely to produce an output.  On a old car, there was a 12v supply to the alternator via the red lamp in the dash board, how it is done on a 2016 car is probably much more complicated.

On a 1976 Capri, I had this problem, but If I revved the engine, the residual magnetism would kick the alternator into life, baffled me for a while till I realised the red "Battery light was not illuminating....
