Rear heated windscreen issue

Featured Replies

Hi all

the connection for the heated windscreen has come off, I’ve now lost it trying to see if I could fix it somewhere in the boot lid itself.

Could anyone tell me if this is repairable or if it’s a case of a new screen. If it’s a new screen any ideas on how much it would cost to replace it or are there any other easier options

From the look of it (covered in what looks like silicone sealer) someone has bodged a repair before. It's probably a new screen job. There are electrically conductive windscreen repair glues available (see eBay) but they are not glues for jointing but are meant for bridging small gaps in the individual elements of a rear screen when they have been scraped.

However that strap carries the full current for all the elements and needs to be electrically conductively bonded to the glass. There are electrically conductive bonding epoxies available that might do the job but they are very expensive. You would need to ensure that the one you chose would room temperature cure and you probably wouldn't get a successful result until the weather warms up. Also there are thermally conductive epoxies that are not electrically conductive that would not be suitable.

Any idea on how much a new screen would be? Or is it a case of calling around various places?

No idea. Call around.

Be careful what you are doing poking about the windscreen with big screwdrivers and levering bits of trim and electrical tabs. You could slip and break the screen. Then you would have to make a claim for glass breakage on your insurance and end up having to pay the £50 glass excess.  😉 So take care !

£260.52. That's supplied fitted and with the vat by a local independent company (well local to me).

Plenty of complete tailgates, glass, wipers etc from scrap cars on ebay from about £45.
