Fiesta 1.5 Tdci 120PS 68plate engine shudder + spanner

Featured Replies

Hi.

Over the last few years my Fiesta has inttermitently shuddered before recovering whilst driving. ( Engine not road ) I always assumed it was dirty diesel or clogged filter that has worked its way though. Revs always seemed to remain the same. Anyhow having not done this for months it decided to do this again a few evening ago for several miles to a point where the spanner and engine symbol came up ( both orange ) with a message "see manual". I stopped in the nearest car park and turned the engine off ( push button ). It wouldn't let me restart if for at least half an hour. Power was there but no turnover. Then after around half an hour I was able to restart it. So I drove it to my local garage and it shuddered a bit going up a hill in 3rd but the next 12 miles was all fine.

I had topped up the fuel tank earlier in the day so I assumed there was something in the diesel so I asked the garage to change filters as well as check for codes . I had to phone them up monday morning as it was sunday evening that this occurred. I left it with them all week due to working away.

Was I right to assume it was dirty diesel or does anyone think it could be something else like a sensor?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I suggest waiting to see what the garage says, and what the DTC's are, or we can all start and have a guess now if you think that will help ?

I was wondering if anyone had had the same issue without having to guess, just in case the garage couldn't work it out.

What or who's diesel are you using?

I have used a combination of Texaco and cheap local garage fuel over last few years. Although more recently the latter.

Garage phoned back today and said it was a DPF regen fault as the exhaust gasses were getting too hot. He said the code had cleared but he was going to try and reset the temp setting anyway. He also said cheaper fuels can cause this apparently from what he had read.

From years of diesel ownership the only "cheap" diesel that is any good is Sainsbury's

Tesco, Morrisons and Asda used to make my diesels run like a tractor, Morrisons used to throw the light on

Yes, I've also had bad experiences with Morrisons and Asda.

Used Sainsbury's on the odd occasion (don't have a convenient store) without problems but I used Tesco diesel (just down the road)  for years (and still do for petrol) and had no issues with a variety of diesels (Citroen, Rover, Saab, Audi, Land Rover and Ford).

Main problem with Tesco recently is they've not had any diesel or E5 petrol for weeks at a time on occasions.

My local is an Essar and they are about 15p a litre cheaper. But I am wondering if its high in Carbon compared to the major brands hence the struggle to burn off the soot.
