Parasitic drain

Featured Replies

I have got a 2008 C Max 1.8 tdci. After parking the battery goes dead after 3 to 4 hours. RAC said the glow plugs wire was getting hot, they tried to find glow plug module to no joy. Have disconnected alternator wires just in case but still goes dead. Taken fuse and glow plug relay out still goes dead. Anyone know where the control module is please, phoned Ford and they couldn't help. Tried to do parasitic drain testing by taking earth wire of battery and using tester but couldn't get any readings. Any help would be great

Obviously as a temporary solution you can disconnect the battery when parked, but I'm sure you don't need me to suggest that.

I've no idea about the control module, if it has one. Can you not follow the wires? Could it be integrated into the ECU?

I'm not familiar with how hot glow plug wires get during normal operation, never having owned a diesel and I didn't find anything useful about it through google search. If it's getting abnormally hot then perhaps there's a short circuit, or of course a fault with the control system? Could faulty glow plugs cause such an issue? I believe that they can need replacing periodically.

When doing the parasitic draw test, did you make sure that you plugged your red lead into the amps plug on the meter? Did you make sure to select the correct range? Is the meter working? Was the (car) battery charged? Perhaps you could take a photo to show the setup to see if we can spot a mistake?

Meters are working ok and battery fully charged. Leads plugged into correct place. Took glow plug 60 amp fuse and relay out but still drains battery.

Then the fault is not to do with the Glow Plugs.

Taken car to auto electrician and he found fault in no time. There was a 23 amp drain which turned out to be the electric heating module behind the dash. This helps warm the car which I didn't even know about. It had melted so he took a 80 amp fuse out of fuse box in engine bay and sorted it. Also found out that the 1.8 diesel doesn't have a glow plug control module only the relay in fuse box and controlled by ECU, the 1.6 and 2 lt diesel as them though.
