2012 S-Max 2.0 TDCi Powershift - skipping 2nd gear when cold

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2012 SMax 2.0 TDCi, around 85,000 miles with a dreaded Powershift box...

I have an intermittent issue (approx every other journey, give or take) where I am finding that after traveling around a mile when cold, the gearbox is skipping 2nd gear for a couple of miles and then starts behaving normally again. This means that slowing to a stop involves a large blip in revs as it changes from 3rd to 1st, then pulling away again revving to 3500rpm before it will jump up from 1st to 3rd. Usually after I get going, it seems to start shifting normally.

I don't seem to have any fault codes coming up, the gearbox has been serviced recently (probably hasn't been done as regularly by previous owners) and the mechanic reported that whilst the oil level was low, there was no sign of debris in it.

I was hoping for some advice on the possible cause for this issue, or whether its just going to need stripping down and reconditioning

Thanks in advance!

Just double checking..... have you had the gearbox oil and filter changed using Ford's approved method (it's not just drain oil, fill oil, put plug back in) since you've owned it?

Also, is your battery fully charged?

Thanks for replying! Yes, the service was done properly - probably a bit later than it should have been though...

Now you mention it, it has thrown up a couple of low battery messages lately - I just assumed the kids had been playing with the lights or something. Is that likely to cause issues with the gearbox?

I'm told that it can do (by reading other threads on this forum) though I've not experienced it myself.
