Have I got an interference engine ?

I have just acquired an older S-Max.  I assume it has got a timing belt cos EuroCarParts are offering one for it.  I don't know if the belt has been changed and it is currently showing 122k.  I can't afford to get it changed at the moment as I believe it will be £500+ so I want to check if it is an interference engine, does anyone know or is there somewhere I can look it up ?

It is a 2009 2.0 TDCI Zetec, manual g/box.

Also, is changing the belt a DIY, kerbside job ?

Any help welcome.

You can DIY it if you have the required tools, skills and knowledge, I did my own on my focus, however don't underestimate how big a job it is. Note that if you do it wrong then you'll end up destroying your engine, just like a snapped belt will. Do you have all of the tools already? If not then expect to end up easily paying at least £250 for a good collection of necessary tools and parts. The necessary kit includes, but is not limited to: multiple torque wrenches (different ranges), socket set(s), breaker bar, e-torx socket set, T27 torx screwdriver / bit set & driver, engine-specific timing tools, the timing kit, pair of axle stands, and possibly a Haynes manual to help guide you.

As for kerbside, it depends. You'll need to be able to raise the vehicle up on both sides to get the front up onto axle stands. You'll need space to work at the front and driver side. You'll need space for your tools and parts. You'll need the surface to be flat and level. You'll need to be comfortable enough that passers by aren't going to nick anything. It's going to take several hours so you'll want to start as early as possible in the day to give yourself plenty of breathing room before it gets dark. You need to be prepared that you may run into difficulties that may require significant extra time or extra tools to resolve and could bring things to a stand still.

I completely understand. Note that some places offer finance deals that allow you to pay things off over time.

Thanks for your responses.  Not a kerbside job I don't think. I'd better shop around for some quotes.

This isn't a particularly difficult belt to change.  I'd hope to find a quote between £3-400 from an indy.
