Featured Replies

Hi ive just bough a 1.6tdci with duratorq engine. After a motorway run of about 50 or 60 miles, the gearchange became very stiff i.e. 2 to third etc the problem doesn't occur when on a short run. its done 90k, am I heading for a major problem?

I'd check the gearbox oil level, especially if there are any signs that its been leaking.

Hi Dan

I thought of checking the gearbox oil level, im not sure where the level plug is on a mk6, any ideas? Also,I believe it uses castrol smx, is this correct, any help would be appreciated.

The fill/level hole is on the front of the gearbox (as viewed from the front of the car) to the right of the reverse light switch.

You'll need an allen key to remove the plug.

I can't remember the fluid spec offhand but its about £15 a litre from a dealership.

Good luck.

D.

The Castrol oil used in the Fiesta generally, is for the baulky IB/IB5 'boxes, and they have developed a special fully synthetic version of their SMX 75/90 oil, known as Castrol SMX-S. Even Halfords stock it.

However I was under the impression that the 1.6 diesel may have the MTX 'box.

The manual that covers the 1.4 diesel, specifies the SMX-S oil, which Ford sell, to Ford Spec.WSD-M2C200-C, SAE 75W90.

Opieoils will give you a discount, and advise a range of brand equivalents. Ford Multi-source, anyway. Several cars need special gear oil.

Hi and thanks to replies on gearbox oil. However the level was correct, so it looks like the tight gearchange is due to another reason?
