Will the auto gearbox repair last?

Featured Replies

Hello, I have a FORD FIESTA HATCHBACK 1.4 Zetec 5dr Auto [Climate]. Recently the gearbox ECU/control unit packed up (£750 repair!) I’ve been told the fault is a common one & the repair will fail sooner rather than later. How much truth is there in this gloomy prediction? The vehicle has done 55,000 miles & has never had the gearbox serviced. Thanks in advance. Paul

Problems do occur with the Traction Control Module (TCM) on a number of vehicles from time to time. In the grand scheme of things I'd not rate it as a massively high failure. In most cases the TCM is not the cause of the problem, it is mostly damaged or corroded wires leading to it, or corroded connectors.

Many garages jump to the easy fix of lets just replace the TCM (customers paying) and see if that fixes the problem. Often it does appear to sort the issue, but only because the wiring gets disturbed and also corrosion gets partly removed by the action of disconnecting and reconnecting the plugs.

Ah! Okay, thanks!
The warning of the “gearbox” failing soon after the TCM repair and needing to be replaced (£6,000, which would make the car a write off), was given by mechanics at my local Ford garage.
Sounds like they may have been exaggerating a little, wanting me to purchase a used car from their forecourt.

Mechanics don't get any commission from car sales.  They get paid for repairing vehicles.  Certainly seems odd for them to put you off a repair!

a little research on your part regards TCM issues, repairs and cost involved in new or s/hand parts is warranted, for your peace of mind.
