Coolant loss

Featured Replies

Hi guys hoping for advice I have the 2015 focus estate, automatic work I belive it's the 1.5 engine.

Last week I had an engine high temperature warning and within seconds the fan kicked in and it dropped straight down to 90, next day happened again this time at a junction waiting to move from the lights went up passed 120 and lost power, had to restart car to get to a safe place to allow it too cool, I topped up coolant and booked car into local garage who could not find any sign of a leak, this was 4 days ago now and car has now dropped again from max to between min and max, any ideas?

Diesel or petrol? The 1.5 ecoboost has been known to blow head gaskets due to the coolant channel making it a very thin contact patch between cylinders. Do you see any white smoke. Any sign of oil contamination?

It's a petrol, no signs of smoke just yet and I've checked the oil filler for milky colour and seems clear, would it smoke constant if contaminated

So further updates, coolant appears to have dropped from max to just above the bottom hose.

No over heating signs as yet and haven't been using the car too much I've checked engine and I have the 1.6 petrol duratec Ti-VCT. Are these know to have any coolant issues, I have been checking and still no visible leaks, looking like another garage visit at this point.

No common coolant issues with the 1.6 Ti-VCT as far as I remember.

I would have a good look around the waterpump and the thermostat housing.  If still no signs of visible leaking then a sniff test on the coolant should confirm whether there's a headgasket fault.  If the sniff comes back good, I'd recommend changing the expansion cap & having a good look around the coolant reservoir for any signs of cracking or crazing.

Was the 1.6 Ti-VCT still available on a 2015?

Yes.  Either 125ps with Powershift.  Or 105ps with manual gearbox in Style trim only.

That's what mine is the 125 powershift

So more updates fitted a replacement cap and top fluid back up, when using to work today and outside temp was 3 degrees so had heating on hi, engine temp didn't go above 75 degree occasionally dropping slightly lower, when returning home engine went to 90 degrees then I tried putting the heating on and after some time the temperature dropped down to 75 degrees again.

Does this suggest anything or working correctly ?

Did you loose any water though?

I am yet to check for water loss as only topped up yesterday and normally has been taking a few days to have a noticeable difference

Have checked coolant and has probably dropped 5mm from the min line as thatbwas all I had enough coolant for will be getting more today to take up to max, level could even be due to where car is parked I suppose too
