Can’t stop aquaplaning!

Featured Replies

Hi all!

had a problem with my 2009 Ford Fiesta

it does not stop Aqua planing . If I am going 40mph+ and I go through any surface water it will do it .

I was on M5 today going 70 (weather was terrible) loads of surface water , and my car wouldn’t stop Aqua planing. Terrifying !! So I moved to lane 1 and took my foot off accelerator to go like 55/60mph and it kept doing it . My old car had never done this ever ?! It was a Renault

I literally had 0 control of my car . It kept moving from all over lane 1 nearly into lane 2 then hard shoulder . I didn’t break or anything but I was so scared so I just had to come off at the next exit and take the back road because I was going to cause an accident bc I had 0 control of my car

has anyone else had this problem ??? My tyres tread is good and it passed its Mot in Nov with 0 advisories. But obvs this is kinda a serious issue as the weather is awful atm and I need to be able to drive safely .

does anyone have an idea of what to do ?

Worth checking tyre pressures?

I picked up a new Fiesta some years back and first drive on motorway in heavy rain it felt awful. Found tyres were overinflated still at transit pressures (44psi) 🙄

That was 4 months ago.

Have you got premium brand tyres, or are you  running about on Kwik Fits super budget brand (or equivalents)?

Try using a slightly lower tyre pressure, something like 28psi

First check your tyre pressures are correct 32psi front 26psi rear

Then check your tracking is good

Make sure you have good quality tyres, use the labels on the tyre when buying, I never buy tyres that are below "B" rating for wet performance.

Worn suspension components can cause stability issues so ensure they are good too.

Shocks, springs and bushes/joints.

Fiestas aren't brilliant though in the wet, the front track is wider than the rear track. If you're loosing confidence fit all season tyres or even winter tyres, the wet level grip performance and confidence far outweighs the quicker wear rates.
