Anti-ecoboom inspection for (almost) free

Featured Replies

Hello,

Im the owner of a CMAX Ecoboost 1.0 2017. Its my third Ford and im very happy with it, in fact ive never enjoyed driving as much as in this car.
Some time ago the so-called "Ecoboom" happened to a friend who owns the same car. I became worried, started a little research and found that the main cause of this issue is a clogged oil pump due to wet belt lifespan. Then i thought about how it would be possible to check the oil pump without an expensive service? Ive had an idea of an endoscope with which i could look through the oil dranage hole. I was wondering if this is even possible, so googled a bit and surprisingly found that someone actually tried this and it perfectly works! Here is a link -> https://www.fiestafaction.com/threads/1-0-ecoboost-how-to-inspect-oil-pump-screen-with-an-endoscope.59400/
So with every oil change you can easily check the condition of an oil pump with this simple procedure using a cheap endoscope (e.g. on aliexpress the price is around 6$). And this probably means that the condition of the wet belt is also fine.

Personally i have not tried this yet, since im waiting for the endoscope order to arrive.
Has anyone tried something like this? Thoughts?

A nice idea if it would work, but I fear it may just give you a false sense of security. I doubt if the image of the oil strainer will be clear enough and it will be difficult to make a full inspection of it. Also just because there is no signs of wet belt material clogging up the oil strainer does not mean that the wet belt is in good condition.

Personally I'd replace the wet belts at 8 years or 80,000 miles which ever comes first. That should then last the vehicle another 8 to 10 years by which time the value of the car will be so low it won't be a major loss if it goes 'boom' at 18 years old.

Completely agree with you.
Its still a good preventative measure before the wet belt replacement time.

Don't know if it is technically possible, but If you are able to post the photos/videos once you've got it and tried it, that would be very informative.
