2009 fiesta 1.6 tdci egr delete/blank

Featured Replies

so I've been looking at blanking/deleting the egr on my fiesta mk7 2009 1.6 tdci (non dpf 16 valve engine) instead of replacing it since its giving issues (keeps throwing a "egr stuck open code").. would the best way of doing this be putting a metal blanking plate between the egr (apparently this doesn't throw up an EML) and the engine or getting something like this https://www.egr-delete.co.uk/product/ford-1-6-tdci-egr-delete-removal-blanking-plate-kit/ and deleting the egr completely and coding it out.. also would it be possible to code the egr out using forscan or would I have to take it to someone special to get it done.. all help, advice or questions welcome, thanks

I'm sure I've read stories that 1.6 TDCi does not like having the EGR blanked, it causes back pressure and can damage the turbo (someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong)

Just stick a new, genuine, Ford EGR valve in and it will be OK, the cheap copies on Ebay etc are just that, cheap and they never calibrate correctly.

im not really trying to damage my turbo so I guess I'll just wait for someone to confirm/deny this, I researched into it quite a bit and don't remember seeing any other mentions of turbo damage from it.. if that's the case I'll just get a new egr yeah

I'd stick a genuine new one on anyway, you'll have a further 10 years trouble free motoring.

Blanking does nothing for performance anyway

I've heard blanking it makes the turbo spool smoother and reduces lag and improves fuel economy etc too

And I've heard it creates too much back pressure when you release the throttle on full boost and can shatter the turbo vanes.

Which is correct?

hopefully not that 😞 this is the first time I'm hearing about egr delete damaging the turbo, everything else I've read it says it helps the turbo and increases it's life etc

Neither are correct...  Blanking the EGR doesn't affect the turbo.  And it doesn't increase performance at all.  The EGR is closed during heavy acceleration anyway.

It does eventually throw a warning light on the 1.6 TDCI, though some go for months or even years before that happens.

Simply blanking it won't remove your fault code.  You would have to have it mapped out by a remapping company.  You can have that done on it's own, or as part of a power map.

I had mine blanked and mapped out for about 3 years/30k miles with a power increase to 140bhp, but only because I had the DPF mapped out after endless issues with it.  (Old type Eolys DPF).  I wouldn't have bothered mapping the EGR out on it's own.  As I say, it won't aid performance at all.

so what do u think its best for me to do in this situation to fix this egr stuck open code? it doesn't throw up the engine management light just brings up the code and occasionally (maybe 1-2 times a week) puts the car into limp mode (till the car is turned off and back on or till the codes are cleared during that same run).. I called up Ford and been quoted 395 for just the part alone

I don't suggest you buy it from Ford themselves, but I would suggest replacing the EGR.

If you don't intend to keep the car for long, you can buy aftermarket EGR vales on ebay for under £50 with 2 years warranty.

If you do intend to keep the car for a while then buy a decent branded one for around £150.  I'm sure you'd be able to fit it yourself.  Then you just need to reset the learned values/adaptions using Forscan.
