Smell of fumes in cockpit

Featured Replies

Anyone have any idea why I have strong smell of fumes in my 2010 S-max titanium xsport. It only happens from time to time but when It does smell it it’s quite strong. Any advice would be appreciated. Also have an issue with my car losing water. I’ve replaced the water pump as that looked like it was leaking and also changed expansion tank and cap for Ford genuine 1. Still losing water tho daily. What can I do? Any one else had issue?

Fumes in the cabin generally means an exhaust leak.

Losing water plus escaping fumes makes me think headgasket or EGR cooler.  Would have the coolant sniff tester before going any further.

Thanks for the update. I’m taking it to the garage over the weekend to see where I go from there. 1st thing pressure test to see if the system has a leak. I lost 2 lites by the time I travelled home 60 mile so don’t make much sense. I have no white smoke or loss of power. But when I got home and car cooled down I put 2 lites of water init. So where is the water going? I’m now keeping an eye onit as the missis is only using for short trips. Local shop etc. and having to top it up each day. #strange

That's a lot!

While you're in this temporary routine of having to refill, consider refilling with proper coolant as it contains corrosion inhibitors. Prolonged use of just water will damage the valves/seats etc.
