Dipped/full beam not working

Featured Replies

Hi all. I'm scratching my head here and hoping someone can offer a bit of guidance.

I'm running a 58 plate Fiesta Zetec. Recently got in my car only to realise both dipped beams weren't working. At this stage I could activate main beams using the indicator stalk. Made sure fuses were both good but still no dipped beams. I then proceeded to switch out the relays. Switched the main and dipped beam relay and no difference to dipped beam, but now my main beam is also not working. Checked both relays and they both still work. Throughout this I've been able to activate the "Home Safe" and both sides illuminate. The lights on my dash which indicate dipped and msin beams also no longer light up. During this process I have also replaced both bulbs but this hasn't made a difference. Home safe works, normal switching does not.

I have switched out the dial switch but this hasn't made any difference.

Anyone able to offer any suggestions or am I making a stupid mistake here?

It might be an idea to update your profile, it's a bit confusing reading about a 2006 Ford model Dawson, when it seems that we are actually looking at a 2008 Fiesta 🤣

Have you checked the GEM ?

It's part of the passenger compartment fuesbox and they are prone to water ingress

Well that's embarrassing 😅  thanks for pointing that out. Should be fixed.

When you say check the GEM, are you referring to a physically checking it for blown relays or via a diagnostic tool?

You may have an issue with the body control module . I have the same issue with my van plus no fog lights , driving lamps or brake lights .

I also changed the dial switch which didnt work.

i checked the codes and it comes up with errors on the body control module and light control module . Theres a communication problem between the modules and to the diagnostics device. Ford have quoted £1050 to replace both units and program them but they also want £125 +vat per hour to do their own diagnostics , its a proper rip off .

The same body control unit is killing batteries by draining them when the van is not running and locked.

Disconnect the battery negative lead before investigating.

behind/under the passenger compartment fusebox is the GEM, it is actually part of the fuesbox assembly.

Remove the large multiway connectors and check them for signs of water ingress, and or signs of greenish corrosion of the connector pins.

-- still confused about the age of the model. You say it's a 58 plate but the profile says 2006

No Body Control Module (BCM) on a 2006 (or 2008) Fiesta. They had a General Electrical Module (GEM) which is a more basic version of the Body Control Module.

And hopefully for the OP cheaper to fix.

Second hand GEM's can be found on eBay for about £100 - Has to be the exact same part number

They still need to be programmed with the vehicle "AsBuilt" data files but you can do that yourself using FORScan software.

Thank you both. I'll have a go tomorrow and see if I can spot any corrosion/water damage and go from there. Was hoping not to need to get the GEM out as I've heard they are very easy to damage. Suppose if it's already not working, not much to lose! Will update once I've had a look.

The indicator stalk would be the next step for your original problem.

Source a 2nd hand replacement of the BCM, of the exact same part number, fit it to the vehicle and take it to a dealer and just pay them to reprogram it

it wont be possible to take the van anywhere if i replace the unit myself as the keys need to be programmed before it will start.

Correct, but Ford will not fit a second hand component, but they will program a car that needs programming. Drive it there once booked in, change the module then tell them it's outside and won't start.

I wont fit a second hand BCM , they are unreliable when they are new !! but i will fit myself and get the van towed to ford for programming.

They're perfectly ok, until they get wet
