Squeaky folding mirrors

Featured Replies

Hi guys, my mk7 has developed a (minor) new issue. For a long time now (~4 years) my electric folding mirrors have been squeaking after they are finished folding. With the recent increase in temperature, this has now developed into quite a loud plastic-on-plastic rubbing sound. I'm assuming I need to lube some part of them, does anyone know how the plastic mirror covers come off and which bit I should lubricate? Also what would be best to use for this, copper grease? Lithium grease?

Cheers

Good choice, WD40 is useless at that sort of thing. When I owned 'folding mirrors', I actually used a 'multi lube' I had lying in the garage specifically for mountain bikes, but worked a treat!

Thought about Googling "Multi Lube" but then thought again 🤣

Cheers, I've got some white grease somewhere. I'll give it a go

Silicone Spray   https://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-silicone-spray-200ml/6699x (far cheaper than Toolstation!)

Works well on plastic and rubber with no oil base that could affect plastics and rubber.  Under no circumstances use any gease or oil compounds.  You might be able to spray between the mirror body where it rotates on its mount as well as behind the mirror. Also it won't affect any electric connection, plugs etc.

i had the same issue on my left mirror so used spray greese..

to remove cover is a simple pull n wiggle..no screws just plastic clips inside..

give it a good spray and that will do

refitting the cover is just the reverse
