S-Max 2014 2l tdci windscreen washer problem

Featured Replies

Hello.

I'm soliciting thoughts about a problem I've discovered today.

Situation: front washer no water, back washer fine.

Background: I caught an engagement of soil when reversing around a tight right driveway, catching front offside bumper such that a piece of trim came loose, popped it back and thought no more.

I'm guessing I've dislodged or broken something behind the bumper like the pump outlet (I get fluid on the ground).

Any thoughts how to access pump or whatever and fix? I read somewhere the bumper needs to come off?!

Any thoughts much appreciated.

I think it's fair to say you've asked and answered all of your own questions.

You didn't ask how much a new pump is, so I'll tell you its £96 from Ford. Less if you buy one from eBay.

If you remove the front wheel and the plastic wheel arch liner you may be able to reach the pump. They just pull out of the screen wash tank (a bit of twisting and tugging).

I was kinda talking to myself while writing. But I do appreciate the confirmation I need to open up the wheel arch liner. I'll give it a try and see what I can seen.

Thanks!

Never heard that expression before - is that the same as a "rapid unscheduled disassembly" of your bumper/trim???

HAA! YES kind of! But that wasn't what I thought I'd typed! Autocorrect mangeld 'embankment'!

You might be lucky and find that a connector has merely been dislodged.  But once you've been through the aggravation of getting to the pump I'd be inclined to replace it anyway. My own pump failed at 9 years/120k miles. Your choice here, but my independent garage which I generally have faith in, said they had experienced failures of the cheaper ones and advised fitting a genuine Ford one (although they are 8x dearer!).

I found the fault. Very nice, removed the air filter box to see where the water was coming from and found a pipe with an inline join that was spewing out fluid. Found the other end and Bingo!

If only all faults were that easy! 😀
