Featured Replies

IT states under trays fitted is this because engine under tray is fitted or something Else

Cheers

That means they can't check for oil leaks etc

And yes

(they're not allowed to take anything apart for an mot inspection, even an undertray)

One of the most annoying advisories for those of us that like a clean MOT sheet.

I have an under tray fitted and have never had this mentioned on the MOT sheet?

Because it's not at all necessary, the majority of cars have an undertray these days.  Only over-zealous testers put it down.

How about this...  if you obscure some safety items (like rear seat belts) so they can't be tested, it will still pass. How can that be right?

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
  • Nearside Rear Child Seat fitted not allowing full inspection of adult belt
  • Offside Rear Child Seat fitted not allowing full inspection of adult belt

So if I place a bit of insulating tape over my ABS fault warning light so that they can't see it, will it pass with just an advisory?

Yes, basically.

But if they can see the tape🤫

No.  The light must illuminate with ignition on, and then extinguish with the engine running.

Defect Category
(a) Warning device not working Major

@alanfp that's a no then🤪

I think you are right Tom.  But on that basis, logic says that being unable to check an item like a seat belt should also be a fail, especially as a weakened belt is "Dangerous", not just "major" - this from the manual:

(b) A seat belt:

(i) or flexible stalk damaged
(ii) webbing or flexible stalk significantly stretched or weakened

Major
Dangerous

But there is a key word just above this section - "VISIBLE" so testers can pass a car if they can't see the belt. If I was in charge of children's safety in the back of cars I would make the tester fail the car and tell the owner to remove any obstruction before bringing it for its MOT.

I do agree from a safety point of view, but that's just not how the MOT works.  You can also prevent a belt check simply by laying the rear seat flat.  MOT's are just a very basic test of roadworthiness, full of loopholes if you know where they are, designed more to make the gov't a bit of money and create another way to keep track of vehicles on the road, rather than an actual 'safety' test.

Child seats has always been a bit of a difficult one, as the garage don't want to be responsible for incorrectly refitted child seats leading to injury or death after an MOT.

Back in my Peugeot days, the rear seatbelt mounting point would rust and rot out (along with the whole inner wing - daft design with no rear arch liner on one side!).  This was totally invisible to the MOT - but that doesn't mean it was safe!  MOT should never be trusted as a safety test IMO.

That's some picture :shocking: (that's supposed to be the "shocking" emoji BTW).

Does the government make any money on MOTs? I thought the fee just went to the tester? They're not going to make much from my annual £35 payment.

That's not even a particularly bad one, most were like that around 10 years old.  I've seen much worse too.  Ended up scrapping one of mine as I just didn't feel comfortable selling it like that, despite having a long MOT.  I also sold another one with long MOT, where one of the hidden brake pipes failed not long after.

The gov't get about £2 for each MOT.  Doesn't sound like much, until you work out how many vehicles are forced to have one every year. 🤔

Well funny you should say that .........

I only just realised a few days ago that I've had my 2019 Focus MOT'd twice and I have a the "Passenger Airbag ON" warning light permanently covered by matt black electricians tape (neatly done) because I find the bright glaring light very distracting at night on dark unlit roads. Nothing has been mentioned about the light being covered although the Airbag warning lights are part of the MOT check. 🤔
