Ford Wall Box output

Featured Replies

Purchased a Ford Wall Box for fast charging of my Kuga Plug in Hybrid.  The output is supposed to be 7.4kw but the Ford Pass app says that it is only delivering 3kw, the same as the normal domestic supply cable.  Anyone experience this problem or have any suggestions on how to get the box running correctly?

The wall box is simply a glorified socket. It is not the charger.

The vehicle will draw from the supply as much current as the vehicles onboard charger can handle, which in the case of your vehicle is 3.0kW [230V x 13A]

If you were to plug a vehicle in to the same wall box who's onboard charger could draw 7.4kW [230V x 32A] then the socket would be able to supply the load.

Can confirm the Kuga phev does only accept 3kw regardless of the wall box output. We have 10kw wall boxes and Kuga only accepts 3 kWh, where as the mache e and transit can take 10kwh Im led to believe.

There is a general misunderstanding about wall boxes, which stems back a few years when they were referred  to as 'Chargers' and the talk of government grants to have an EV charger installed.

EV's using standard domestic AC mains, all use there own onboard chargers. Even Tesla's with there domestic intelligent charging sockets still have the charger as part of the vehicle.

The problem in this case is that Ford are advertising half the charging time with their wall box in all the Kuga PHEV literature but nowhere specifying the max rate the cars charger is capable of. Seems like false advertising.

That looks like a clear case of the marketing department having no understanding of the product. It would seem to me that anyone purchasing a Ford wall box on the understanding that it speeds up charging would have a very good case for a full refund and even compensation.

It will be interesting to see how this develops 🤔

Depends if using the wall box does halve the charge time, easy enough for the OP to test.

OP said it’s pulling same power as normal plug.

Ok, Ford claim the wall box charges the kuga phev faster, OP could try both types of cable and see if it’s true, then complain to Ford if it doesn’t.
