Fiesta mk8 lug bolt snapped

Featured Replies

Hi guys

did a bit of a spring clean on the car today, including taking wheels off to clean underneath. On putting the wheel back one of the lug bolts snapped whilst I was tightening.

has anyone had this on their mk8 fiesta?
can’t seem to locate a bolt for my particular model - do you know the diemensions of it?
Is it easy to do?

nightmare!

thanks for any advice

Ford don't use wheel bolts.  Never seen a wheel nut snap so I take it it's the stud that's failed?  The studs come as part of the hub assembly, which also includes the wheel bearing.

To shear off a wheel stud would take an incredible amount of torque.

Since this is not going to be a quick or cheap repair, I'd contact Ford customer relations and see what they have to say. Even over tightening the stud would be more likely to strip the threads than snap it.

Ford won’t care, they will deem it user damage. I snapped one of mine and had to get the hub and bearing replaced. It depends on the car whether or not the studs are replaceable. They certainly aren’t on the Focus ST.

There are some aftermarket studs on eBay for about £10 each.  I'd assume they'll still be M12x1.5mm as with the older models.

No idea on length though so you'd have to measure yours to confirm that.

Wow not a straight forward thing then.. was tightening to recommended torque setting I found online 130nm so less than what Ford suggest, was using a proper torque wrench and used it on all the bolts no problem have done before.
yea, it’s the actual wheel stud that has snapped and is stuck in the wheel but too.
not massively happy if this is likely to be a manufacturing fault it’s only done 26000 miles and has been very well looked after.

so new hub and bearing brilliant!
thanks for all your help!

Your best bet is to ask the dealer. Some cars including Fords have replaced studs, some require new hub and bearing if they’re not changeable.
