Auto folding mirrors not working correctly

Featured Replies

Hi. Recently found this great site and hope you helpful people will indulge me. I originally posted this to an old thread but go no response, so I'm starting a new thread in the hope that it gets some attention.

On my recently-bought 2010 S-Max (not keyless entry) the door mirrors fold automatically only when I (1) lock, unlock and relock the car using the remote, or (2) press the manual folding button ONCE while the ignition is still switched on and then switch it off, exit and lock the car using the remote. This applies to both mirrors at the same time.

When the ignition is on and I'm in the car with the doors closed I can fold the mirrors manually by pressing the manual fold button, but I need to press it TWICE the first time, after which a single press will do. If I do this and stay in the car, the windows will now fold and unfold when I press lock and unlock on the remote. But once I've opened the driver's door I'm back to my original position.

Seems the first press of the manual fold button is doing something to enable both auto and manual folding, although there is no indication that anything is happening.

Eddie W's solution in the older thread of somehow resetting the mirrors doesn't work for me.

This is more an annoyance than a problem, but I would like my mirrors to fold as they are supposed to. Any ideas?

I've read this four times now and I still don't understand what your problem is.

So as I understand it:

Locking or unlocking the car with the keyfob the mirrors fold in, or unfold. Which is what you would normally expect.

If you are inside the car (doors unlocked) and the ignition is on, you have to press the mirror button twice to make them fold in. Again that is normal and how it should be.

If you are inside the car (doors unlocked) and the ignition is on and you then press the mirror button once the mirrors will then unfold. This is normal.

I'm not understanding what is the problem ?

Oh dear, I think you upset him 😂

I'm sure he thinks he has a problem, but I don't understand what he thinks it is 🤣

I'll expect he'll be back next month to check for answers.

When they're in the car and press the fold button, nothing happens.  They have to press it a second time before it'll work.  After that initial fold, it works on the first press each time.

I don't know if this is a fault or not.

Mine are much more reliable, you wind the window down,  then fold the mirror into the car - works every time! LOL

The problem is when I lock the car just once with the key fob the mirrors do NOT fold in, unless either I (1) lock, unlock and relock, or (2) press the manual fold button once before I turn off the ignition: then I can lock-and-fold with a single press of the key fob.

I believe the mirrors should fold when I simply lock the car with the key fob without having to mess around with button-pressing or lock-unlock-lock.

Any clearer?

Eureka !!!!!

By George I think I understand the issue 👍

So..... next question. If you 'Dead Lock' the doors which also turns on the Alarm system do the mirrors autofold ?

No. (Unless I've pressed the manual button first, as noted.)

(Should probably have said: In which case they fold on the first press)

So if you 'Dead Lock' doors (indicators flash twice) by pressing the keyfob lock button twice in 3 seconds then the mirrors do fold in ?

"No. they will not fold on a single or double press if I have not pressed the manual fold button first.

This is starting to feel like a Two Ronnies sketch...

Do you know if the mirrors were factory fitted?  Almost sounds like a retrofit that hasn't quite been done correctly.

Maybe the 'fork handles' in the motor have failed...🤣

Perhaps they could lubricate the mirrors with a bit of linseed oil...  "Lindsay Doyle, I haven't seen him for ages!"

I get the feeling this is going nowhere other than round in circles, so I will just live with the inconvenience. Thanks for responding everyone.

You could use FORScan and restore the vehicles "AsBuilt" files direct from the Ford servers. Remember to save your present file first before overwriting it with the original AsBuilt.

If the original files fix the problem then all well and good. If the mirrors stop folding all together then as Tom suggests the vehicle was not actually built with them. In which case you can restore your previous file and just go back to the way things were.
