Oil pressure light strange behaviour - 1.0 Ecoboost

Featured Replies

Hi again, wouldn't ask such a stupid question but considering it me be related with clogged oil pump strainer I decided to do it. 7 years old Focus 1.0 Ecoboost 90K km. The car have been serviced regularly at the Ford dealer with the correct oil 5W20 Castrol, no engine flushes. This is for sure, the car had 5 year warranty and I have all service documents.  Since I owned the car /2,5 years/ on cold start it usually takes about 1 sec. for the oil pressure light to go off. Which I considered normal - oil is all drained in the sump. When hot it goes off immediately. However I noticed strange behaviour on cold lately: when first start the engine the light goes off immediately /as in hot engine/, then it is back on and immediately off again. Some kind of blink and all happens within 1 second.  It seems that I didn't noticed it before /not sure/. It didn't happen with all cold starts also but perhaps with every second or third. Do you think its normal or I should prepare to drop the sump off to check the strainer? I actually intended to do it but in September with the regular oil change.

I'd be inclined to check now

Yeah, do it now so I know when to get my partner's fiesta gone. That's had no flushes and Castrol 5w20 every 6 months (78k miles now and 7 years)  from new

I've read that the oil light is normally supposed to stay illuminated for about 1-3 seconds when the engine is initially started. Mine generally stays 1 sec. during which there is a  single blink.

An update: I recently joined a Telegram 1.0 Ecoboost canal with a lot of fans. So, a few guys have noticed the same issue only on cold start (they shared a brief video) but thay claim it is not related with a clogged oil pickup as it also happens on cars with recent timing belt change.

Hi Tony, did you sort out this problem? I have the same issue, after change of timing belt, on cold start oil light go off and back on and immediately off again. I changed oil filter and was ok for a week but it came back again.

did you take the sump off.....   bits of belt block up the strainer on the inlet to the oil pump

I was told that strainer was clean. They took the sump off when they change the timing belt

the sensor of the oil light could play up

the software no doubt is a pile of junk and might have bugs creating lies

but we need the real hands on ford boys to comment on both of those potential causes

I would not advise using the vehicle in this manner - and likely would aim for a new pump which likely has the oil pressure relieve valve as an integral part - not sure if the pressure relief valve failure is still a trick ford employ to help sell new cars

this was her mk 2 pressure relive valve spring - after I got a metallic clunk and a shed load more oil flew out and burnt my hand as I changed the oil filter a few years back - even Bic use better springs on their Biro's - the new pump was a modified part - even needed different bolts, which aren't in the packet
