2nd gear dropping out when going down hill.

Featured Replies

afternoon all, so as the topic says car is dropping out of 2nd gear if im going down hill and not on the power. if im accelorating it seems to stay in gear but as soon as i ease off it kicks out of gear. no other signs of gear issues changes feel smooth and engage as they should, although now and then it will refuse to go fully into reverse until i start to lift off the clutch slightly.

any idea's on what the cause it and how to sort it would be greatly recieved 🙂

thanks in advance as always and if any other info is needed ask away i'll do my best to reply with the answers.

It sounds like the gearbox doesn't like hills. Easy fixed, move from RhonddaCynonTaff to Norfolk 🤣

As it's only one gear, it's probably a gearbox fault, not cheap or easy to repair...probably just something to put up with.

You could try adjusting the selector cables, cable might be slightly too short for 2nd and putting it under tension all the time.  But take care if you do that, as you could lose gears altogether if you get the adjustment wrong.

pmsl not the fix i was looking for but you could be onto something haha

On a more serious note, it does sound like the beginnings of a more serious gearbox fault. Either it needs refurbished by a specialist or pick up a second hand unit at a scrap yard.

yeah if it is gearbox then i'll put up with it, its been doing it a while just havent had chance to get on here and mention it. not a massive issue and will go back into gear easy enough although being it only happens going down hill if/when it drops out i tend to just put it into 3rd 🙂
