2005-2011 focus roof rack fixing point

Featured Replies

Hi, I've had a bit of a problem today fixing a roof rack to my 2005-2011 focus titanium. One of the rediculous plastic screws hidden under the putting on the fixing point snapped. I tried a hot screw driver but it just carried on chewing it up. In the end I tried drilling it out. I don't think there's anymore plastic in there but I can't get the metal bolt to bite, it just won't screw in. Does anyone know if there's a way to replace the nut in the fixing point? Otherwise I'm in trouble. I have to carry ladders and can't without a roof rack. And as it stands I can't fix the roof rack. Any advise would be greatly appreciated at this point. Thanks

Post a few photos of the problem and I'm sure someone will have an answer.

Is this the threaded hole you are referring to? Plastic plug removed.

If it is, you may have damaged the threads using a drill bit to remove the plastic plug. If the thread in the roof isn't damaged too badly, you may be able to get away with running down the existing thread with a tap of the correct size. Use the thread of the bolt you have to select the right one.

If that fails, it looks like it would be possible to fit a wire thread insert to salvage the location. Kits are available to buy, but a local garage (if you have one) would probably help you out.

I am trying to put a roof rack on but other than the rear passenger side the bolts will only go in about 4 to 5 millimetres. It appears they are hitting metal but the the passenger side rear goes in around 15 mm

Hi Magster

Regarding your comment about only being able to screw in roof rack bolts about 5mm. I have the same issue, roof rack came with M6 x 20mm I can't get any of them anywhere near tight on the metal bracket.

Did you manage to solve it?

Thanks

Pete
