Ford Focus 2010 1 6 TDCi White smoke and oil on turbo

Featured Replies

My 1 6 TDCI focus have started smoking white clouds of smoke when car is warmed up. Check oil and coolant and IMG-20230708-WA0011.thumb.jpeg.0cba7a290572a3080929641cb9a3acbf.jpeg is fine but seems to be loosing oil.  I took engine case off today and noticed the plastic piping that attaches to turbo don't seem tightly fitted  I took the pipe off and found inside is caked in oil and also all oil that have leaked onto the turbo.

Has any one had the same issue and could point t me in the right direction.

Car do not over heat do not loose power runs absolutely fine just smokes, and smells of burning. Bit it's actually getting embarrassing now.

The turbo has blown an oil seal.  Will need to be refurbished or replaced.

What needs to be replaced the turbo? Once this is done will this rectify the problem.

The oil seal inside the turbo needs to be replaced.

You can either have your turbo disassembled and refurbished with new seals.  Or buy another turbo that has already been refurbished.

As long as the oil level hasn't dropped too low, there should be no other damage caused.  If it's been driven any distance with very low oil then there could be wear inside the engine by now.

The oil has never been driven below minimum on the dipstick level. Always topped up before getting to that point. How will I know if its caused any more damage

Tom !!!

I expect better of you than that.  What would your English teacher think of you ?

Johnny 5 maybe 'disassembled' by our American cousins, but I'd expect a true British gent such as yourself to be advising the turbo  be dismantled 🤣

You won't without stripping the engine apart.  As you say it hasn't been driven with low oil then it should be fine.

Well, the turbo is made by Garrett, an American company.  And it's fitted to a Ford, an American car.

Must admit, I've always considered 'disassembling' to mean something would be 'reassembled' afterwards.  And dismantling was more for end of life recycling.  I've never heard of anything being 'remantled', except maybe an old fireplace.

Don't think my English teacher would be surprised...I got the same GCSE grade in both English & French.

Hi Guys,

Just an update ... so I had the new turbo installed by a mechanic yesterday. Also at the same time cleaned the DPF. After installing new turbo let the car run and was smoking really bad I new this could of been down all the build up still flushing out of the system. After taking the car for a drive the smoking eased and After reading up this clears within a few 100 miles. Car was driving amazing finally got power back 🙌  then around 30 mins later when changing gear sounded like a whistle in each gear then car completely lost power ( foot flat and still only reaching like 20-30mph)

Had a look today no hose leaks and all attachedbno obvious issues. After taking the pipe off the turbo I did notice that the turbine in the turbo will not move its like its stuck?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

The new turbo is broken, lack of oil lubrication on the bearings has caused it to seize up.

Every garage should know there's a full procedure to follow when replacing the turbo on these engines.  You can't just replace the turbo without replacing the oil feed and cleaning out the sump etc.

If you can't spin the turbine with your fingers, it's dead I'm afraid.

Where did you buy it from?  Most refurbished turbo's come with a warranty, but the companies will only honour it if the full procedure has been followed.

This PDF shows the procedure for one manufacturer, others may be a bit less strict.

I bought it from turbo powers in ebay it was brand new. I've messaged them and they asking for photos but how can you tell by photos

Oh.  I don't have experience with them but the price seems suspiciously cheap for a brand new turbo.  It's possible that it was just made with low quality parts.

Is the turbine off-centre in the housing?  That would at least show up in pictures.  Does eBay allow video uploads?

They have refunded me now. So onto the next one now. But it was fitted properly and oil getting to it so I have no value to why it seized. Must of been a dodgey part or something. I just hope it don't happen again
