Is there an idiots guide to upgrading SYNC, please?

Featured Replies

Having been carless for s couple of years since my 57 Fiesta Zetec TDCi shuffled off its mortal coil and sharing my girlfriend's car, I just bought a 16 Fiesta Zetec TDCi and trying to get my head around the interface. I wanted to check that the SatNav maps were up to date and all I could find searching online was a page on Ford's website saying that to get the latest maps, I'd have to upgrade the SYNC 1 v5.8 to v5.10 and that the only option to do this was to book a service but no indication of how much that would cost so instinctively looked for other, preferably cost-free options. But not having a clue about SYNC and feeling like the version I have is practically obsolete, everything I have read seems confusing and more than a bit contradictory - Ford say that SYNC generations cannot be upgraded but things I have read which went over my head have claimed that they can. Everything else is talking about much later versions which are of little help. Hence the title, is there an idiots guide to upgrading SYNC, please?

The Maps are on the SD card in your Sync 1 system. You need to buy the latest Map SD card, check out sites like eBay.

Thanks for your reply. The eBay link in that thread has expired but when I searched on eBay, the listings for the maps cards seemed to indicate that they required SYNC 2 and were quite explicit that they were not compatible with SYNC 1. Like I said, I am completely new to this so it doesn't take much to confuse me.

Thank you. I'll look into it.

Is it necessary to update SYNC? I'm not sure what this means (screen grab) on the Ford website.

Just remove you old card and insert the new one it may take a little while to complete that’s all you need to do

The screen will tell you what is going on and when it’s done
