Keyless Start Research

Featured Replies

Hello there,

Right I'm trying to gather some info on how the keyless start works on the zetec s, not the titanium, basically what I want to know is, is it the same principal as thte titanium as in as long as you have the fob on you it will start the car or do you still have to put the key in the ignition and then press thte button foe the final engine start. If it is that does anyone know which colour ignition wire to connect power start button too, I done it on my mk6 but wanted to clarify.

On the other hand if it is truly keyless and doesn't use he ignition barrel does anyone have any idea if it is possible to retrofit, my assumption is I would need a new ignition barrel of some kind as well as new keys also due to the fact it asks you to put the clutch down I'm assuming and ecru change, but would that be needed as it is a titanium I'm getting.

And by the way I can't add keyless to the build as it already has the parts assigned of something.

Thanks for any help.

Anthony

Is keyless now an option on the Zetec S then? It was only on the Titanium when I ordered mine - I know the S1600 had the option of keyless though.

To answer your question - the system is 'true' keyless but the ignition barrel is also involved.

Inside the car the setup is as follows: there is a key sensor within the car which detects the key and allows the engine to start if the clutch is depressed - I believe this sensor is mounted in the courtesy light area. However, the key barrel IS connected to the ignition system despite being blanked off. There is a magnetic contact in the bottom of the key and a matching one behind the ignition barrel - if the batteries in the fob are flat it is still possible to start the car by touching the key to the blanking plate over the ignition barrel and hitting the start button. I have tested this as I didn't believe it, the car will start with no batteries in the fob at all.

To retrofit the whole system, you're going to need all those parts - key, ignition barrel setup, key sensor and the wiring to get it all into the ignition system. If you simply install a power button, that system wouldn't be keyless at all as you'll still have to put the key in before you press the button.

All of this is of course before you even consider the keyless entry part of the system - you'd need the three 'zone' sensors (driver door, passenger door, boot) plus the lock releases for the doors (the little black button on the handles, plus new handles) and it wouldn't surprise me if the boot release is different from a non-keyless car as well. All in all, a very tricky retrofit.

Hope that helps.

Yeh sorry i meant the s1600 which is why im not expecting anyone here to have it, with the limited customer base, im not worried about the entry part as that is the reason i couldn't justify buying keyless on the first build (long story) as you still have to push the button to lock it which i see as pointless and would just use the key for that, however i do want the keyless inside.

Does anyone have access to Ford systems to try and compare what is different between say a s1600 with keyless and one without, and if anyone does have one am i write in thinking you have the normal buttons to get in the car and just the engine start, which is what i want. If nobody can i think il just put the button in anyway and put the key in as soon as i get it and wait for the glow plugs to warm then use the button i just think after 2 years of using my fake engine button in my mk6.5 i will probably snap the key if i went back to using the old method so to speak.

If anywone can help it would be massively appreciated.

You can grab the wiring diagrams from ETIS. A quick look shows a "Keyless Vehicle Module" that contains all the control electronics, plus a separate "PATS Transceiver" that has the aerial to talk to the key (but there should be one of those anyway to check a normal key is genuine). The starter button connects to the Keyless Module. The module uses an extra relay in the central junction box to turn on the accessory power. It also connects to the Engine Junction box to crank the engine, but that looks like a reuse of the connection from the normal switch. I can't see any connection to the Message Centre (which would be via the CAN bus, I'd have thought) or any connection to the GEM or ECU.

It'd be a major piece of work to sort out the wiring loom and a lot of parts you'd need to source from a scrappy. And your warranty would be totally void - not a good move on a brand new car.

you will also need new door handles, with the button in and this includes the bootlid aswell i think
