Cluster led light colour

Featured Replies

Can the cluster led colour and the stereo and window buttons etc be changed in colour?? Anybody able to do it?

well... you'd have to desolder the existing LEDs and solder in the new ones...

I'm not very hands on can you recommend anyone ?

I run an instrument cluster repair service (link), and I'm not too far from you. Let me dump my thoughts onto you...

Yes the LEDs in the instrument cluster can be changed to a different colour. There are about 60 LEDs on your model, though most of these probably should be left alone, in particular the warning lights. Indicators should also maybe be left alone. The backlights would be the main target for replacement, maybe also the PAT light could be considered.

The LEDs are tiny, requiring someone with a fine tipped soldering iron, like those of us doing cluster repair work, and someone who knows that they have to be put on a certain way around. I have seen other services offering LED replacement, I haven't ever done it myself.

If you haven't had the instrument cluster's main wiring connector pins re-soldered yet you'd probably want to get that done at the same time whilst it's apart and in the hands of someone capable of doing the necessary fine soldering work.

Then comes the question of the cluster's LCD, would you want the colour of that changed? The LCD consists of a blue-tinted pane of glass with a slightly transparent piece of typically orange coloured plastic glued to the back, and red LEDs behind it. Changing the colour would not necessarily be easy, involving not just changing the backlight LEDs but finding a suitable piece of plastic and suitable glue to swap onto the back of the glass, and maybe having to experiment to factor in the tint of the glass.

I'm currently charging £54.99 to repair cracked wiring connector pins (and you have to take the unit out yourself and post it to me). I don't know how much I'd personally want to charge you for LED replacement (on its own or on top), and it would naturally depend upon whether or not you want to mess with the LCD. Honestly the whole thing might be such a pain in the butt that I'm not sure it's something I'd actually want to do at all.

As for the radio, I've never taken one apart myself. I'd naturally expect the screen and lighting to just involve the same same sort of work, but I've no idea how easy or difficult it would be to take the radio unit apart to get at what needs replacing. Then of course would you even be up to the task of getting the radio out of the car yourself to send to me? So on top of paying me something in the region of say £50 again for doing the same work on the radio unit itself, you might end up having to bring the car to me (adding travel costs of course) and paying me a bit more to actually take it out of the car and refit it for you.

And as for the window button lights, for that you'd definitely be wanting to bring the car to me, I'd be having to take the door(s) apart to some degree to get out the parts with the lighting, and then who knows what the nature of those parts are; can you even take them apart to get to the LEDs/bulbs without breaking them? And of course you'd be having to pay me yet more for all of this extra door lighting work.

Furthermore for the radio and window control lights I don't know what the LEDs/bulbs look like, creating a potential problem sourcing them. There could be a big delay between taking things apart and getting a hold of the replacements.

So just how much is this all going to cost you for someone like me to do it all? I don't know, £150-300 maybe??? Can you afford to throw such money away like that just for such a colour change? I'm really not sure I'd even want to take on such a task on myself anyway, it might be such a faff that I think I'd be much happier dismantling an entire engine bay, I don't know...

What about just the rev count and Speedometer

Do you mean the coloured needles? I'd forgotten about those. Yeah so the silverly plastic bit you can separate from the red bit, the red bit is a semi-transparent bit of plastic with a red tint. I presume the LED under these is actually white. Maybe someone sells them in other colours, otherwise I'm not sure what you'd do about those. 3D print some replacements maybe?

Actually double checking a spare, you can't even easily take the ones that'll be in your model apart after all, I must have been thinking of the ones from a different model.
