Forscan - Updated with how to disable trailer module

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am hoping to use forscan for the first time this weekend to deactivate the trailer module on my Mk3 focus, but wanted to check a few things first.

1. I believe the above module is in the BCM file, but just wondered if there is more than one I need to deactivate (either in this file or another one)? Is the file called BCM as I have seen different variations on different sites?

2. I believe when using for the first time, I am asked about a secondary boot loader. I have read somewhere about downloading a file first before connecting to the car? Is this required or will it do it automatically as part of the process?

3. I have read a few guides/watched a few videos so will ensure after updating the module(s), I press the stop button. I will then check for fault codes before disconnecting from the car (using spark plug button). Is there anything else I need to check or be aware of?

4. I believe the lead I will be borrowing is a forscan one. Am I right in saying the BCM module is HS can network?

5. Is there anything else I need to know/be aware of?

Sorry for all the questions, just conscious of the issues if I don't do this right 😭.

Thanks in advance

Matt

UPDATE - for anyone that is looking to do the above (either enable or disable)and it's their first time using, I have included what I found/did when using it today. I hope this is off use. This was on a MK3 Focus 1.0 Ecoboost so may be different for other models.

IMPORTANT PREREQUISITES- As part of this, you will need an extended forscan licence (2 month free or 12 month paid)and to download the secondary boot files (SBL). These failed when trying to download as part of the process, so can be downloaded from http://forscan.org/download/CalibrationFiles.zip. You need to unzip these and then move to your C drive (C:/Users/ADD YOUR NAME/Documents/CalibrationFiles.

You should now be ready to start using the below:

1 - Plug OBD device into car and plug into laptop

2 - Open Forscan

3 - Click connect to car - this is a spark plug symbol on bottom left of the screen

4 - Switch ignition on

5 - Save profile first time you use it.

6 - Wait for all the modules to load. It can take a minute or so depending on your laptop and OBD device

7 - When all the modules have loaded it's ready to go

8 - Click the computer chip on the left hand side (6th button, which is just under the spanner icon). This is the programming of the modules section

7 - Click BCM main module - then press the play button to read the module.

8 - To access this module, FORScan will ask to load the secondary boot loader. You will already have the files you downloaded earlier. It does given you the option to download but mine failed.

9 - Once the SBL (secondary boot loader) has installed the access to module will continue. The dash will go crazy and say engine service now etc. This is normal.

10 - Forscan will now display a list of what can be changed.

11 - press the save button to back up file (and name it something like BCM_original)

12 - In the search box, type trailer, which will then filter these down. There was two on mine. One called Trailer Module and other Towbar.

To disable, change trailer to "without trailer module" and towbar to "without trailer tow attachment".

To enable, change trailer to "trailer module 13 position socket" and towbar to  "trailer tow attachment".

13 -  press write button at the bottom.

14 - It will give you a small list of what you are about to change, check this matches want you want and click yes. The service procedure will start and hopefully the changes will be made. May need to cycle ignition off/on

15 - IMPORTANT - Make sure you press the stop button.

16 - Click DTC on the left side. Read the codes and delete any. Read again if you have deleted any.

17 -IMPORTANT - To exit FORScan, press the spark plug button next to the one pressed earlier to disconnect from the car.

I think that should be it.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks

Thanks mate and thanks for your support with this, very much appreciated

What version of forscan do you have please? I have the latest version so I may try an older version to see if mine works this time, as stated in another forum

What version is the software on your vLinker FS cable ?

I'm not sure sorry, how do I check this, please? After looking elsewhere someone else recommends rolling back to an older version that's all?

Should be no need to go back.

Watch this video on how to update vLinker FS

All done and updated the vlinker, thanks for that video, what do we try next?

Can you remind me exactly what it is that you are wanting to do please ?

Using forscan, I am trying to get into the central configuration main, it then asks for the secondary boot loader which it tries to get itself like it should do but it says error, downloading DV6T-14C097-AB: ER

I'm connected to the internet via a extender as my car is on the drive, with a now updated vlinker FS usb connected

I've looked around and some people have downloaded the calibration files and then it works for them, some have used a previous version of forscan as it didn’t work for them with later, so I’m just trying to get this to work as other modules open
