2010 Focus TDCI Intermittent loss of Torque

Featured Replies

Hi all

I keep losing torque going through the gears on my 2010 TDCI Focus.  If I stop the engine and restart it right away the problem is rectified for a few more miles. I have had the EGR and fuel filter replaced which cost me a small fortune and dont want to keep spending on it until I know what the problem definitely is.  There were no engine lights on and no codes showing.  I can still get up to speed and there is no misfiring at all.  I have blasted it down the motorway a few times in 4th gear to force regens and all is fine for a few miles until it happens again. Has anyone else had this issue please?  I'm thinking it's one of the sensors playing up but I'm no expert.

Many thanks

What did you use to read codes?

Well I took it to a local garage initially before I had the EGR valve and fuel filter changed and there were error codes relating to the EGR which they cleared when they installed the new one and since then (2 months ago) the engine management light hasn't come on but I used a friends code reader after losing the torque a few times, it was only a cheap one which didn't show any errors but if the engine management light hasn't come on it won't will it, or will it?

Regards

Try using FORscan and see what codes are stored

Underboost would be my guess.  Loose or damaged boost pipe, or sticky turbo vanes.

You will need some fault codes to avoid replacing any more parts unnecessarily though.  Hidden codes will show on Forscan even if the engine management light isn't triggered.

Hi, thanks for the replies.  I bought one of those Swordfish OBDII scanners from Argos as the engine management light was on and it showed 2 faults, P042F and P042F P.  Mysteriously the light has gone off now on it's own and things seem ok again but I know it will only be a matter of time before my torque goes again. Boost pipe seems all ok.  Not sure why it's saying the EGR faults again with a new EGR valve fitted recently.

Regards

If you bought a cheap EGR valve from ebay you will still get issues

I'm not sure what code reader you have as I've looked at Argos and couldn't find the Swordfish scanner. Unfortunately as with almost every generic code reader they will not read Ford specific DTC's as there are two canbus systems on Ford's (High Speed and Medium Speed).

As Tom originally stated above you need to use FORScan which is developed especially for use on Ford vehicles. There are versions available for windows laptops and for mobile phones.
