Car aircon cleaning

Featured Replies

Hi,

I bought one of those car aircon bombs (autoglym sanitiser one) as there was a musty/glue kinda smell when initially running AC.

I've used it as directed but not sure if I've done so properly now. I just placed it in the front passenger footwell with the ac on and in recirculation mode with the front vents open, however I didnt have the foot and face vents set to on (where you can select footwell, face or windscreen air direction) although air was still coming out of the front vents.

Does that sound ok or will I have to redo it. I'm wondering if it should have been placed in the rear under the passenger seat and with the face and foot fans set to on. Hope that makes sense!

That's fine.

It probably won't work if you've got a strong smell though.  Usually need to use a foam cleaner that clings to the AC evaporator for a few minutes.

Thanks. Its not a really strong smell but its just a musty smell like old books or something. Goes away after a few minutes but it isnt pleasant. I'll see how it is when next on, which looks like tomorrow with this heatwave.

no, haven't replaced that. Went for a drive this morn and turned the AC on full blast, the musty smell has gone, could smell the citrus smell for a bit, smells a lot fresher anyway. Do you think I should replace the pollen filter? I'm taking it to Ford for a service in the next couple of months so I guess they will change it with it being a full service, or would I have to ask them to do that?

The pollen filter is so easy to change in the MK3 it's located in the passenger footwell just make sure to get the correct one activated carbon.

If you're having a Scheduled Service done at a Ford dealership, the pollen filter is included in that.

If you're having an Essential Service, the pollen filter is an optional extra.

Actually I've realised I need to book a full service sooner than I thought!

Upon booking it on Ford's website I can see they offer a new(er)? filter with price on request :

Ford micronAir® proTect Cabin Air Filter lined with antibacterial surface protection by means of a functional filter layer based on fruit extract (active ingredient Citric Acid CAS-Nr. 77-92-9 and/or 5949-29-1) for use in air handling/air conditioning systems. Safe bacteriostatic and fungistatic surface protection against a multitude of bacteria, yeast and fungi according to ISO 18184.

More about it here if anyone's interested

May as well go with that instead!
