Ford IB5 gearbox compatibility

Featured Replies

Hello guys

I hope someone can help with this

I have a 2005 ford fiesta WQ 1.6L petrol with 200,000kms on it  , which I have posted about on the fiesta forum it has a  gearbox chatter/growl  which is heard at idle only , gear shifting is fine ,  noise disappears when cluch is engaged at idle , and noise is getting worse.

I believe this is due to gear roll over at idle and worn input shaft bearings, the noise is more pronounced when the Ac is switched on due to raised idle speed , the noise is definitely from the box not the ac clutch assy or release bearing .

A quality 3 piece cluch was fitted   10,,000kms ago due to slave cyl leakage , the input shaft was checked  for rotational resistance and noise , axial clearance and endfloat by hand and seemed ok , (the gearbox noise was present prior to cluch slave leak) would have been ideal to use a DTI , but mine was at work 720 kms away when the slave cyl let go .

I have dropped the gearbox oil out today and flushed  as the noise is getting more noticeable when sitting in the car , oil didn’t look that healthy,  considering it’s only got 10,000kms on it.

I have been I touch with a gearbox overhauler here in Oz the cost  is more than I paided for the car , so looking for a used replacement .

I have found a replacement box  with low kms for a really good price fitted on a 2010 ford fiesta WF 1.6L petrol model fitted with 5 speed IB5 gearbox , the vin number of this vehicle is WF0JXXGAJJAU86562 , gearbox part number 2S6R7002GK I have attached the data plaque.of g/box and pictures for ref

The vin of my  ford fiesta WQ is WF0HXXGAJH6U36986 , fitted with IB5 5 speed b/box part number 2S6R7002GK

My local ford dealer has been very helpful giving me these part number , which come at no supprsise as being  different.

From what I have found out so far from trawling the internet.

Input shaft spline size is 20mm 17 spline and is supposed to be the same I all IB5 box’s

Final drive ratio for WQ 1.6L boxes is 4.25 .

I have compared the photos of the used box to my vehicle and noted following

starter moter location is this same

Bell housing looks to be the same bolt pattern

Not sure about the following on the used box for compatibility

Final drive output spline shaft size

Input shaft length

I decided to post on this general forum rather than the fiesta forum  , hoping that as this box is used on several models the more people who see the more chance of a positive response.

If anyone has any information or thoughts as to compatibility of these gearbox’s I would love to hear from you.

I might add that , I have had no luck finding a WQ box locally here on Sunshine Coast Qld , for a responsible price .

Thanks heaps

Hey my bad , could  not see how to edit the post  but the info for the used g/box should read 8A6R 7002 DA , as per pics in original post .

IMG_1565.png

2S6R 7002 GK is correct for MK6 (2002 on) Fiesta

8A6R 7002 DA means it is intended for MK7 Fiesta (2008 on) as it's fitted to a 1.6 petrol, like your current one, mechanically it will suit.

There may be some external differences on the casing to suit installation into the MK7 chassis over the MK6,

I'd make sure I had access to the donor vehicle in case I needed to adapt some of the mountings or shift linkage, or the clutch or the starter motor

Other than that, I think you may be lucky

Let us know how you get on

Hi  Dave

Thanks for you reply , massive help .

I am looking at going to see the fella who is selling the box and checking the case  bell-housing stud pattern and mounts  position  for compatibility against my fiesta which is still drivable

I have found through a bit of research that the Mk7 fiesta has the same clutch replacement exceedy part number as my mk6 , so I believe they both are using the same 20mm 17 spline input shaft.

what I can’t know until I pull my gearbox is the length of input shaft and diameter and number of Splines on the diff

Any ideas of theres likely to be a issue?

I have tried to search the part number of input shafts  and diff centres to see if there the same numbers on both boxes , but haven’t had much luck yet .

There will be physical difference because the replacement box has a different prefix.

I doubt, very much, it's innards.

Could be drive shafts

Could be shifter linkage

To update , yesterday I put the donor WT gearbox 5 speed into my WQ .

The gearbox case is the same on both box’s as is the splines on input shaft and final , I also put a new set of drive shaft oil seals in which are interchangeable between the gearbox.

The main differences are which I overcame by swapping parts over are as follows

Reverse signal switch

Gearbox breather

Gearbox mount

Gear selector mounting bracket

Gearbox impulse speed sensor

Unfortunately the gearbox I put in is nosier than the one that came out , under same conditions, engine running in neutral and under slight load

-Ac switched on

-Steering in full lock with pas pump loaded

Noise disappears when clutch engaged , comes back when released, and is definitely from gearbox.

The guy I bought the second hand gearbox tells me that the donor had 160000kms on it , the gearbox that came out out had 190,000kms

Would anyone have any idea if the input shaft bearing bearing on these IB5 gearbox’s is a known weak point .

I am know thinking about pulling down gearbox and inspecting  bearings /changing out the input shaft bearings/ main shaft bearing   , anyone know if there are non oem alternatives bearing available
In Uk or otherwise ?
As parts from Ford dealers seem to be way more expensive in Oz than in the Uk from memory from when I once lived there .

IB5 has always been a weak spot, full stop. So with that mileage I wouldn't risk a used box.

Perhaps, now you are mobile, you could have the original box rebuilt then refitted?
