Mark 3.5 Fiesta gear selector shaft leak.

Featured Replies

Hello All

New boy here. My kit car (Quantum H4i) was based on a 1994 Mark 3.5 1.6Si.

Since then, it got a present so it has a 1.8 silvertop Zetec. So, it's essentially RS 1800 spec.

The gear selector shaft seal is what's causing the problem. It was leaking when I got the car so I bought a genuine Ford seal, as in the pic.

This has a pressed steel houing that was a really poor fit in the machined socket in the gearbox. I tried using Loctite 638 but the gap is too big for this to cure. So, I put it in using bodyfiller (!).

After I topped up the oil, most of it peed out within a day or two. The seal housing is oil tight because of the body filler but the lip seal itself is doing very little.

Thinking laterally, I've found an outfit that offers double-lipped nitrile seals. To get one to fit, I need accurate measurements as per the marked picture. I may even be able to use two

This is practically impossible to measure in situ so I'm here in the hope that someone can help out.

I need the two diameters shown and also the depth of the seal socket in the gearbox casing. It would also help to know how far the selector shaft moves in and out, such as when moving the lever from first to 2nd. Similarly, how much the shaft rotates (e.g, 1/5 of a turn, when the lever goes across the gate.

I don't think this is too big an ask - if somebody has a box out of the car.

I just chanced on the picture here.

This is the seal for a Mk.4 Escort and i suspect it's the same.

I know that Mk.1 Ka is the same.

Good news, if it's accurate.

The part number is 6027025 77TT-7288-AA
