Head gasket or more ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

New MK8 custom owner, baught a 17 plate MK8 2.0 ecoblue transit custom as a non runner. With no history or idea what had happened to it. (Copart)

I connected a new battery up as the one in the van was completely dead and wouldnt hold charge, checked error codes only one -low oil level
Coolant cap was broken (stuck in) and tank was completely empty so filled it up, took about 11 litres. So no water in coolant system . Checked oil and level was high, a little too high.
Cranked the motor , turned over fine and started very briefly and turned it off. went round to check on things and found coolant tank with a fair amount of oil in it and a decent puff of smoke , oil level was much much higher ( water in the oil too I presume)

Next step is to pull the head off (half way there already) replace gasket and check head, replace head if necessary, will also do a timing belt service same time. Mileage is 70k . And will presume it was a head gasket failure, possibly due to coolant cap been stuck and operated never putting coolant in. And/or plain gasket failure as I believe this motor is prone to.

Is there anything else common to these motors that I may be missing ? Anything else I should be checking/replacing at the same time that could be related ?

Thanks , looking forward to the new project 😁

I would also suggest whilst doing this you remove the sump clean the oil pickup and change the oil pump belt.
