Ford Fiesta 1.0 tapping noise cold start

Featured Replies

So for the last week I’ve noticed that my Ford Fiesta 1.0 makes a sort of tapping/knocking noise. It’s only there when I cold start it in the morning and seems to go away once warmed up.

I’ve made a recording of the sound.

Not sure if this is a normal engine noise and related to the colder weather or if there’s something wrong. Anyone could tell me if this is normal?

Difficult to say from a video but I would suggest that it isn't normal.

Sounds more like a worn bearing in the belt area to me.  (Like a roller skate).  Will quieten as the ball bearings expand in the heat and remove the slack.

Mine makes a similar sound but its most noticible when lightly revving the car when its cold, goes away when warm. But mine has done it since the engine was new.

The same rattle/knocking sound? Mine also only seem to do it when cold. It’s gone once the car is fully warmed up.

Any idea what it could be?

I think so, that distinct deeper pitched slower tempo rattle under the usual higher pitched rattling sound of this engine. No idea what it is. I tried researching this myself and never really found any answers. It ranged from "this nosie is normal my engine has had it for years and never got worse" to "oh my piston was broke". As long as it doesnt get worse its probobly fine, this engine seems to make all sorts of noises espeacially when cold.  My old engine made a similar deeper pitched rattle noise but it was way louder and didnt go away when warm so thats probobly when you need to worry. But yours doesnt sound bad to me.

Yeah, that’s why I am/was worried. Some say it’s normal, some say it’s the engine going to die.

You happen to have a recording of yours?
